It's not hard for me to do it, but I do it for a living, Click here and see what is involved. Only you can determine if it's to hard for your abilities

It's a piece of cake, if you're atall mechanical, just take your time, and follow the directions in the great link Don has provided., But I see no reason to change the gear oil, unless you deem it necessary at this time, just make sure it's full because there is a small passageway (for circulation) between the upper, & lower units, located near the middle right side that uses an o-ring as a seal, (part (b) in Pic #2 of gear housing installation) which normally isn't affected by this whole procedure.

HUH?.....^^^^
Make sure you replace the o ring with a new one & change the vent & fill seals as well.....
Once you separate the upper & lower the gear oil will leak out if not drained.....
Save yourself a mess & drain it beforehand......;)

I've never had the gear oil leak out on me, except for a tiny bit, (a negligable amount) because it is held in place by vacuum in the upper housing, and by vacuum, & gravity in the lower gearshaft housing unless you turn it upside down, but it is something to be careful of. I know what you're saying Haut, that is the "proper" way but the whole "oil change procedure", including how to, and replacing which particular 3 o-rings, is not even mentioned in that link. It is a separate item in itself.

That's pretty much all you need for that repair, and a few tools. I was leary of doing it the first time myself and since the drive was in the shop for other repairs I just had the shop take care of that too. I got the opportunity to watch as they replaced the impeller and I'll be doing it myself from now on. See if they'll let you watch if you get the chance and you'll see how easy it really is. My pump base had to be replaced too, but the rest was a piece of cake, but I like seeing someone else doing it correctly before I attempt something I'm worried about tackling myself. Good luck either way!
