It ain't that hard, & doesn't require any special tools.....is it hard to change a impeller on a 165 hp mercruser and leg. im not a mechanic but i do have common sense. or should i hire out
It's a piece of cake, if you're atall mechanical, just take your time, and follow the directions in the great link Don has provided., But I see no reason to change the gear oil, unless you deem it necessary at this time, just make sure it's full because there is a small passageway (for circulation) between the upper, & lower units, located near the middle right side that uses an o-ring as a seal, (part (b) in Pic #2 of gear housing installation) which normally isn't affected by this whole procedure. It's not hard for me to do it, but I do it for a living, Click here and see what is involved. Only you can determine if it's to hard for your abilities

Make sure you replace the o ring with a new one & change the vent & fill seals as well.....
Once you separate the upper & lower the gear oil will leak out if not drained.....
Save yourself a mess & drain it beforehand......![]()
