Re: Legal Q: Can't work on my boats?

Im not saying to rat on your neighbors . I mean that for sure there are some real situations in perhaps a downgraded neighborhood (the hood) where the law should demand compliance. The city code inspector isnt your friend and seems to be playin hardball.I say give some back if you can, afterall you are a tax payer and shouldnt let some govco clerk working for code enforsement run over you. Ive had several run ins with the code jerk over things like a flat tire and having a car parked beside my house on the grass...I dont give them too much respect and really dont care if they think Im a jerk and troublemaker because I can be to people messin in my business.

Re: Legal Q: Can't work on my boats?

So let me understand this post.

1. You have three unregistered boats in your yard two of which are wrecks.

2. You have an unregistered boat you're using on the water because the previous owner registered it. (This would make it untraceable to you in the event you decide to do #3 with this one also or if involved in an accident)

3. To get rid of one (and possibly the second) boat you are thinking of sinking it in violation of EPA laws, etc.

4. You're upset because your city ordinances don't permit any of this crap.

Ok...I understand now. Good luck. You've got my sympathy.

No, I have three unregistered boats, one is a wreck, one is stripped down to the hull, and one works.

To get rid of one I'm taking it to the dump. To get rid of the second, I may be able to sink it IN COMPLIANCE with all federal, state, and local laws, since it no longer has any polluting material in it. As I said, it's stripped. Sinking it requires only the appropriate DNR permit and a public hearing. It will make a nice target for divers.

I'm upset because the property I paid $200k for and continue to pay taxes on doesn't allow me to work on my boat.

I understand the purpose of the "no junk" ordnance, and while I believe in personal freedom I understand that a balance must be made. However, I don't agree with not being able to work on any boats except for "minor" repairs.

So, here's my solution. I'm going to junk one boat and sink or junk another, then I'm going to move my other boat to a covered shelter, either my garage or a portable shelter, and work on it in there. Winter's coming anyway.

I bought this property as a starter house, and I'm going to try to improve it as much as possible while I live here a few years. When I sell, I intend to make a profit on it and move somewhere outside the city limits where I won't have to put up with this crap.

When I sell it, I'm considering looking at the state's published list of level 3 sex offenders and seeing if they would like a good deal on a great place to live :) :) :)

Between now and then, I'm going to keep careful track of the city's letters to me and of my neighbors' yards. With the exception of the one neighbor I like who has the same problems as me with old jerks complaining, all my neighbors could use a good dose of their own medicine.

I used to rebuild washers and dryers in my carport. had over 40 units in my yard. all in some sort of dis repair. plus 2 boats and a smomobile. home was the worst on a very nice cresent. looked like a crack house.

had lots of trouble with the city.

someone complained on you! no iffs ands or buts!

find the neighbor that turned you in and shoot them!!! (just kidding):D

the neighbor doesent want an illeagal marine shop across the street.
just clean up the yard! or pull the boats outta site!
do it, or the trouble will never end! and there will be a neighbor hood war going on. your dog might disappear one day.!
they dont want you dragging down property values. and they have a right to. if you have been fined, you are breaking the law!
i know it sucks but they are right.
do what you can to clean it up and then have an im sorry party. (and yes u buy the wine)!
they will be more tolerant next time.

as 4 me. i was forced to get a repair shop/store.
now im doin 2 mill a year! their complaints was one of the best things that ever happened to me!

P.S I feel for ya man.

I live in Minnesota and you must have missed Joe's radio show (Garage Logic) in which Minnesota is referred to as the state where absolutely nothing is allowed.

Hey, that kinda sounds like here in Norway. Wonder why.... :)

But, seriously, nobody likes to live next to what looks like a junkyard, which is probably why such city ordinances are put in place. To the original poster; looks like you'd be better off either moving outside of town or building yourself a garage big enough to contain your repair projects.

I'm not one to start an argument MAYFLOAT, but what if across the street I own a 500,000 dollar property that I can only sell for 300,000 because of your crap and attitude? You are costing me 200,000. Am I supposed to look the other way and turn the other cheek? I think not.

No argument. I stated that I moved to an area in which I can live and play as I wish. I'm out of the city limits, but it will soon be again in the limits. BTW, I do keep my property presentable to comply with the regs. My property is worth more than my neighbors, so I guess I'm bringing down my own value. When I decide to move, all the stuff will be gone, so does that mean the value will still be lower after all the stuff is gone? I don't think so.

Re: Legal Q: Can't work on my boats?

Alot of this even goes deeper than city ordinances & building codes. Many times there are community specific rules that govern what type of home can be built and what you can do with your property.

Some examples that I've seen over the years:
1) All homes must have the same appearance-> IE you can't pull in a mobile home or build a vinyl siding home when all of the other homes are brick.

2) All detached structures must match and blend in -> Meaning your storage shed has to match your house.

3) Fencing restrictions -> ie no chainlink fences.

4) No Eyesores -> Junk Cars/Boats/Etc. Normally unregistered vehicles count as being an eyesore.

One of the stranger ones my step-dad ran into (he manufactures Log Homes) was a community ordinance that stated the floor joist spacing had to be no more than 24 inches on center. The home they were attempting to build there was a log home with exposed rafters & floor joists. The joists were 3x9 glue laminated timbers spaced at 48" covered with 2x6 Tongue & Groove Decking, which was way more than adequate. The structural engineer & buildings code office passed the design but due to the community ordinance construction was halted. Eventually they got a waiver for this home and construction was able to resume. We discussed this with the homeowner and it seems that this ordinance was just in place to ensure that no substandard housing was built in the development. Even though the heavy beam construction was much stronger than a typical 2x10 subfloor the ordinance was blocking progress!

One of my favorites in the town my parents live in (Coral Springs, FL) is no clothes lines amongst many many many others.

Your options sounded similar to mines, get rid of the boat, move the boat to a storage facility, move from your place or (this one applies to me) put a fence that will shield the boat from view.

Yes, those do sound like explosive options.

Gee..... I'm waiting for someone to turn me in! I finally put a wood privacy fence up to hide my stuff, figuring someone would do that ( and now I know my stuff is safer.)

In the meanwhile, why not put up a sculpture?

How about adding some windows to the garage/home?

I would find out if those portable garages are allowed. I bought two at Costco this year for $200 each. They are great.

Most municipalities do nothing about that bylaw until a neighbour complains.

Re: Legal Q: Can't work on my boats?

I was having a new home built where HOA had rules that said NO boats or RVs could be parked on the property. It was an upscale place and I figured it would insure long term resale value so I agreed. Anyway after the builder started doing a real slack job on the contruction I voided the contract and didnt buy it. Soon later because the sloppy builder had trouble selling the rest of the houses and HUD came in giving away money and moved in alot of low rent types right beside the yuppys already there. The HOA rule book was thrown away,,,,,,,,the neighborhood now doesnt have the "class" the first buyers(I was almost one) paid for..........that sucked for them and the wife thanks me for backing out on the deal to this day.People that can afford 1500 bucks a month payments often dont have much in common with those who can only scrape together about 400 bucks per month do they?
