can't find my original post, sorry if this is a double.. I found a hull that is free to haul away, but no title,is there a way to get a legal title for it ,such as a abandoned title? do not want a homemade title, and owner wants nothing to do with any paperwork or hassle, just wants it hauled off..

Re: can I get title?

As you likely know Florida is rough on title transfers. I doubt you can get the normal way.
There is a way however but you have to go through Georgia.
I may be able to get the exact info. but basically you give a bill of sale to someone in Georgia. Georgia does not have titles. That person gets it registered in his name then resells it to you.
The instructions are then go to the Florida tag office, present it to them, don't say anything and let them figure it out.
I do personally know someone who did this. He bought the boat legit but no title was available.
He got a clean Florida title.
I don't know the costs however.

Costs about $150 but you get everything needed to get a clear title in your name.

Re: can I get title?

I would like to find the same for a trailer. I was able to title the boat in NC but the DMV wont title the trailer since the owner died 12 years ago and there is no paperwork left. The widow do not want to do any paperwork since she will have to go back to ga to do stuff in person and she lives in nc now. Any help will be appreciated.

Do a little cutting and welding on it, then get it titled as a home made trailer.
Once you modify it, that is what it is.

paint it, then home made. a lot of states don't title trailers, Florida being one.

That kind of stuff is common and don't think for a minute that the state doesn't know about it. But so far, it seems like they are letting it go. However, I would suspect they might someday create a database of those title companies. I'd hate to be the first public example. So, I'd consider just going through a friend or acquantance in a non-title state instead of a title-washing company.

in florida they don't have titles for boat trailers that are small to around one for a 23 footer..,the tag registration is all you need and that you transfer for ownership.. may be the same where your at..

Re: can I get title?

In NC you need the title or the trailer registration. The lady has none. Called GA with the license tag number to see if they will mail a registration but they will not talk to anyone but the person named in the registration whos has been dead for over 13 years. The widow will have to present paperwork to prove the gent is dead and she inherit he property, then she will have to register the trailer to then sign it out to me. So, she is not doing that.

I thought about the home built option before but they send a person to inspect the trailer and I wonder if they are going to ask me for the receipts for the material. Looks like that is my last resort though.

I understand the unwillingness to use one of these companies, but if your not buying and retitling stolen goods whats wrong with it?

Ive used them 2 times for car titles with no problem. Just had state police check Vin number to be sure its not stolen. Get a bill of sale from whoever you got it through to prove you actually bought it. And then call them. Saved me from crushing a classic that could only be used for parts otherwise.

Re: can I get title?

thanks jmlloar, in my case, the cost of that service are excesive. I can see them for a several thousand dollars vechicle but over $200 for a trailer? I can buy one for that amount. Besides, NC does no accept their tittles.
Im sure somebody else might benefict from it though..

I understand for a small trailer. But its good to keep in mind for a rare boat that would otherwise be landfill.

What kind of hull is it? I might have one that kind of matches it. Never heard of anyones hull nbrs. being checked. All the authorities are concerned with is a current registration sticker. fred

Re: can I get title?

Nandy,NC has got to be the worst state to deal with.I'm having a problem getting tags on a brand new camper,i have all the paperwork from the dealer and they still won't accept it.Still working on that.
I also have a jet ski trailer they won't title.I bought it in Florida and have a notorized bill of sale.NCDMV are A**H****!!!
I tried the home made route and they made me bring the trailer to a DMV officer for inspection. He said it did not look home made and refused to let me register it.
I pull it with the tags off my boat trailer:mad:
I had another boat trailer i bought in SC from a dealer. It was still registered to a guy in NC that had it 6 years ago.The DMV finally gave me the guys name and what city he lived in.I was lucky and found his Phone number online.
Called him and he was great. He had to send off for a new title then meet me to sign it over.He would not let me pay him so i bought him dinner.I lucked out on that one.
Good luck!!

Re: can I get title?

I know Gary. Im planing to do the same, just use the tags from the old trailer as they are very similar and both dont have the label with the vin on it. I am just looking in the future, if I want to sell it, I will have to sell it in sc.

This must be new as last year, but as far as the hin, in NC they will make you send them a pencil trace of the HIN and the fish cops will check it. I know...

Yep,I don't know why NC is so strict...what a pain.
I don't carry my trailer registration with me when the boat tag is on the jet ski trailer. If the cop asks i'll play stupid....lol;)
