Johnson CD-16 5.5 hp

I have been quietly soaking up the information on this forum for a while. I must say this is an amazing resource !

I am slowly going over a 1959 Johnson 5.5 hp and I have found a hose I can't identify. I was wondering if someone could help me out ? What is this hose called, what is its function ?

It force-feeds oil from the bottom bearing up to lubricate the top bearing. It's pretty neat how it works.

BTW, it is a simple job to convert that one to a fuel pump if you are interested. The pump mounting bosses are already there.

F_R thanks for your help ! As you can see I will have to replace the existing hose as it is cracked. I am planning on adding a fuel pump to this motor sometime over the winter using the following method:

Duckworks for motors that aren't already set up. On this one simply use a "real" Johnson set-up. Pumps are available right here at i-boats. All you have to do is tap two holes and drill one, install the pump and fuel connector, connect the hoses and go fishing.

Thanks everyone ! I will explore both options before making the conversion to a fuel pump. Just one more quick question. If I choose to drill how do I avoid getting metal shavings in the crank case ?

Duct-tape the exhaust outlet, remove the spark plugs, blow compressed air into the plug hole while drilling. That will blow the chips out instead of letting them fall inside. Before, somebody complains, I'm not suggesting pressurizeing it to 100psi. Just a bit of pressure, I'm expecting major leakage at the duct tape. Also, you can use some grease on the drill bit to catch them.

Actually, you only have to worry about that last little bit as the drill breaks through. Keep pulling the bit out of the hole to clear it and when it breaks through stop immediatly and don't shove it on in and clear the chips on the inside.

Truth is, a chip or two probably won't hurt anything anyway......probably. It's soft aluminum and probably will blow out the exhaust as soon as you start the motor......probably.

You can also turn the engine sideways and drill up to help the gravity to pull the shavings down and out.
