I used to work up in high environments, but that was quite a few years back and without safety gear!!! - I'd like to be able to regularly work on top of our ship cranes(150-200' high). Maybe I'm thinking I'm not made out of steel(well ok a few parts) anymore? Whats a good way to get used to heights again? Thanks

I found out I got more comfortable the more I did it. I was on a job for a year where we had to climb 200' towers every day. The first few days my whole body ached from the short steps and holding on tightly. After 2 weeks I got more relaxed and used to it. The work to be done kept my mind busy so I wasn't always thinking about how high I was. It's not easy, and its not for everyone.Just keep a healthy respect for your safety and don't get too complacent.

This is what I found from working on the edge of a new construction 30story building with no walls, just a steel cable from beam, to beam,as a pipefitter, it took me a coupla weeks to get used to it, by then I was working off an 8ft scaffold on the edge, putting pipe together,,, carefully. True don't get complacent.

Re: how to conquer fear of heights? :)

I use to hang out on the roof of the house as a teen. But since my car accident I have a fused ankle and it really throws my balance off. At times I walk with the aid of a cain. I had a job interview the other day, and the manager asked me if I would have a problem climbing to change the signs out, I wasn't about to lie to her. I told her that I don't have good balance and I can't really climb safely without loosing my balance. Sorry I couldn't help ya on the fear of heights.

I nearly fell off of a step stool a few weeks back, my father caught me. I would love to go into maintenance but I can't climb and that's what allot of them half to do so.

Hmmmmm.

No fear in an aircraft, including hang glider, or parachuting. Paralyzed standing on the edge of Grand Canyon.

As long as I am attached to something I am cool. I suggest safety harness/rope and the old advice. . .don't look down.

FEAR!!!!!!!!! the mind killer. Being a little nervous is normal if you're afraid you could jeopardize someone else's life, by making a foolish mistake. I spent 10 years working Derriks in the oil field. I still get to go up on occasion. 90' off the floor man I love it.

I used to work on high rise buildings. There I was on 40+ stories buildings (on the outside!) dangling by steel ropes on each end of the platform I was standing on.

The one thing that you always had on was a safety line. Should everything else fail, you still have the safety line.

That safety line is what gave me the sense of security.

Always have a backup plan and go for it!!!

I am not afraid of height but I do have fear of falling. Is that the same thing? I can look straight ahead and see a long distance so I know I'm way up but that doesn't bother me. If I look down, holy schneiky that's different. I went bungee jumping and now looking down doesn't bother me much anymore.

It not the falling that really concerns me. It the sudden stop at the bottom
