I'm new to the forum and was wondering if anyone can give me information on how to test the stator on 1978 140hp Evinrude. I have no fire on the bottom 2 cylinders.

You will need an ohm meter and a DVA meter. There are four brown wires comming from the stator, two to each power pack. Get a manual for your engine for the specs and take your readings and compare. If the stator checks out good, it will likely be the power pack.

You can try switching the packs and see if the problem follows the suspected pack. If it follows the pack, it's in the pack, if it doesn't....bad stator It is also possible (not probable) to have two bad coils.

Also....check all your ground connections.

Welcome to iboats. Here are the DVA numbers you will need, if you do not have them

"ttp://cdielectronics.com/Downloads/tabid/55/language/en-US/Default.aspx"

Also seems like he is saying the bottom cylinder for each port and starboard side are not firing, as opposed to the entire port or starboard. Under that assumption, I would assume 2 bad coils or a combination of coil/plug wire problems, as opposed to power pack problems, or Im misreading his post.

Southern, best way to test this is exactly as Flabum stated, swapping the coils with known good ones.

Look into the boot of the plug wire. If the spring is corroded or rusty, you can get a boot kit for the plug wire. You will need to cut back the plug wire, leaving enough to still reach the plug, trim about an 1/8 of an inch of insulation off, fold over the exposed wires, insert new spring, lube wire, then slide new boot back over.

Thanks for the replies and yes I am talking about the port and starboard sides. I'll try swapping the coils and checking my grounds and will let you know the results.

Ah! another instance of me not reading properly! time for glasses.

In this case, it will not be the stator.
