Re: 1986 evinrude 140 question

ok, took it out today for a shakedown, on the big end, the motor spins 6000 no problem. when at idle, in the water, she idles at 1200-1400, i am positive there are no air leaks, timer base is all the way on it's stop, buterfly's are closed, still has the lean cough, and high idle..????? BTW in gear, she idle around 1000-1100rpm.

Idle is a little high, Id imagine you should be around 650 under load in gear.

Re: 1986 evinrude 140 question

Have you checked/set the throttle pickup timing?
Reason I ask is you said: "timer base is all the way on it's stop". I hope it is not on the full advance stop, if so there is you fast idle problem.

Re: 1986 evinrude 140 question

no, it is not on the WOT timing stop, it is on the idle timing stop, and it is not adjustable. and also, the throttle arm will not go back any further due to some sort of a " water valve" that is tied to it. can this be removed?

Re: 1986 evinrude 140 question

my idle timing as it sits right now, is 7*-8* atdc, wide open is 18*-20*, can't get an exact reading, it is fluctuating.

yes, p/n 507547, 1986, 60-v6 models, including 120,140,200,225.
says nothing about idle timing, only speed.

i also noticed my #1 plug is a dry, sooty black, where as the others are a shiny dark brown.

I have the 1985 version that covers 2 thru V6 p/n 507508.
What I found under the link and sync, is that it is not very clear in the directions for initial timing. I suspect your timing issue is with the link and sync. Follow the procedure again and confirm each step in the order laid out in the manual.

This is usually from and over rich condition.
#1 plug is not oily at all ?

I would re-do the link and sync first before I became concerned too much about #1 plug.

linc & sync is fine, exactly to OEM specs.

If the cam follower is just off the cam, and the Throttle valves are fully closed. It sounds to me that you will then need to adjust the Idle speed with the top adjustment screw that connects to the timer-base. That should bring your Idle timing down to a reasonable figure and the idle speed also.

Sounds like the Carb sync is not right or one of the carb butterfly shafts is bent or hanging up. Position the throttle so that the cam follower is not making contact and look inside the carbs.....make sure ALL the butterflies are completely closed. If one is slightly open....that will cause the symptoms you are having.

Re: 1986 evinrude 140 question

i changed the heads back to stock, put the factory jetting back in it, and it runs smoother, but not slower. i checked for vacum leaks, checked the top bearing seal, it LOOKED fine, but i am going to go ahead and remove the upper bearing carrier and change it, i have a new timer for the engine, as the one that is on it shows to be for a 90hp, as well as the powerpack??? why? i can't tell you, this is how i bought it. could it be because it had the dual plug billet heads? this motor come from a 16-17' hydrostream that ran in excess of 75mph, it has some braided hose on the lower unit, i was told it was for the water pick up, which by the way is not on the side of the unit, it is on the front, lower part of the nose, that is why i have been using a big stock tank to run it, i can't run it on the muffs. i will try to get some pics of the carb area, and linkage tomorrow, and under the flywheel, it has a strange looking stator, and the flywheel is different from the other loopers i have seen, looks like it has had quite a bit of material removed.
