Does any1 have tips for taking care for a Whaler? i got a 9fter and besides knowing to scrub it....I NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!! The paint is flaking and barnicles are on it. Im probaly just going to repaint it because i dont have enough money but im going for good paint. Im wondering if the color affects the fishing and if a different color will effect have soon it will flak. Im going to sand it really good too though. Is there different types? ISince i have a
9fter im wondering if that narrows it down.

What is flaking off?

Gel coat doesn't normally flake off unless there are very big problems with it. Paint will flake off a poorly prepped surface easily, so the answer to your question depends on the source of the problem.

A pic would be great too.

First weigh the hulll and check that against factory spec. The inner foam in BWs can get water logged weekening the hull. The gel coat never flakes, only paint and paint needs repainting.

Agree. It must have been painted at one point.

Re: Tips on care for a Boaton Whaler

UGH!! :(

What I would do is remove all paint, including paint on the wood if there is any. Then I would restore the gelcoat finish and varnish the mahogany. If you only want to make her servicable sand and repaint with high quality paint.

The story about Boston Whaler foam getting saturated is mostly myth. The foam is closed cell, but water can intrude between the foam and the hulls and wet the foam surface. I have had two Whalers that were supposedly saturated. I drained the water between foam and hull, sealed them up and used both for years.

You need to give us more information in one thread rather than the same information in several threads.

It would be a good idea to preasure wash the bottom and see where you are at. You might find there are some cracks that need fixing before you paint. I would preasure wash as much paint of the inside and restore the gel finish like JB said. It might be a lot of work but the older Boston Whalers look great. Good luck!:)

I think what you have is a Boston Whaler Squall. It was intended to be a tender or a sailing pram. The sail kit, I think, was optional.

I think your right my motor barely fits on the "transom" so im thinkin bout repainting it then put some plastic on it. I dont care if it cracks just as long as the boat doesnt:)

Re: Tips on care for a Boaton Whaler

Not so sure it's a "myth". Several respected friends on the boston whaler continuous wave site have detailed various model whalers with hundreds of pounds of water in the foam. They have reported long involved methods to drain with limited success and severe damage from freeze/thaw cylces. It is certainly a very rare problem but before restoring one I'd weigh it first.

Would like to see a pic of this boat, to aid in your restoration.
