I own a 2000 Evinrude 225hp FICHT engine. I was recently told by a local marine mechanic that I have zero compression on my #6 cylinder that basically, I have a blown engine. There were a few options, (1) buy a new engine ($14,200), (2) buy a rebuilt power head ($6500 installed), or (3) have the engine totally rebuilt (which they no longer do). Is it worth my money to have an engine this old repaired or rebuilt? The local dealer tells me it?s not because of the historical problems these engines have had. The only problem I had was with the "black box" which was covered under warranty. I just need some suggestions and recommendations.
Just a quick update ? I contacted BRP tech-rep who advised me, ?pre-1999 FICHT engines were troublesome, that?s what gave them the bad name. But from 1999 up, the FICHT were good reliable engines. BRP even stood behind OMC warranties on the 2000 and some 1999 versions. Plus, the current E-Tech engines are the hybrid of the FICHT engine which are very reliable.? His recommendation, ?have the 2000 FICHT rebuilt if it?s been reliable before this problem.? Some very strong words and encouraging hope to my depressing situation ? may need to consider rebuilding.
