will this work?

For the spring/summer, i am thinking on buying a small outboard to run my 14 ft glasspar lido for the lakes that require less than 10 hp. I am finding quite a bit of older 7.5 Johnson/Evinrudes for sale used. How well would this work for my boat? I would have no more than 2 people on the boat. With two people and gear and motor, it would be close to 1000 lbs, I believe.

about 3/4 as fast as a 9.9. no speed demon, but the main thing is the shaft length right. most of the 7 1/2 were short shaft. 16 inch transom.

A 7.5 may not get a 14'er on plane with 2 aboard. A 9.9 might.

Re: will this work?

Thanks for the replies. The lake I am planning to fish on primarily will be a relatively small lake, so I don't need anything with a lot of speed. The issue I am seeing is that there aren't many 9 or 10 hp motors available and the cost of the 7.5 is generally considerably less. I am also looking for something that I can use my current remote controls and steering. My current set up is with a '67 33hp Johnson Super Seahorse. No doubt, i would prefer the 9 or 10 hp motors, but the better deals are with the 7.5 hp motors (late '50's to early '70's).

Do you think I could get 10-12 mph with the 7.5?

BTW, my boat has a 15 inch transom. I would need a short shaft. Also, the actual dry hull weight, I believe, is 350-400 lbs.

Pushing it, in full tune.

Yes, short shaft. That is good news, Most engines of that HP are 15"-shorts.

Your controls will work with many small OMC (John/Rude) engines. You may need mod's for steering. Easy do.

What kind of mods would be needed and where could I find them?

It looks like the 9-10hp range would be best for my purposes. I'll keep an eye out for them. I have seen a bunch of 9.5hp motors from the early '70s. However, it doesn't look like they would be compatible with the controls I have. Also, I've read in other threads that they are not so easy to work on.

The steering is a rotary steering mechanism. I don't know how to describe the attachment, but it is a spring loaded quick release attachment that hooks into the hole on the steering bracket handle. The controls are the old style two lever type that hooks onto the shift lever on starboard side of the motor and the throttle hooks onto the port side.

Oh, btw, the boat is a 14ft closed bow fiberglass runabout. I'm currently doing some transom work on it and will repaint it before the season begins.

this is a 55 15 hp, a picture of your set up would help.

Re: will this work?

thanks for the pic, tashasdaddy. I can't send a pic quite yet as the boat is not near my place. I live in the city of Chicago and have a garage i'm renting in the suburbs where I store my boat. Also, the boat is currently stripped, so the motor steering, control, hardware, etc. is completely off the boat. But the pic helps out. it seems that my control setup is like yours, but the steering set up is different. I don't have the attachment you have on the transom and the bar. My attachment goes direct from the cable to motor steering bracket. It also clamps on to a block that would be attached to the gunwale or the transom. Once I get a chance, I'll attach the cable to the motor steering bracket and post a picture (won't be on the boat though).

Re: will this work?

ok i know you have a gunnel mount, or the transom mount to hold the cable. what i don't know is, does the 7 1/2 has the connections on the motor for the shift and throttle cables. i'm going to ask some one else to look at this.

Re: will this work?

The 7.5 hp is set up for controls at least after 1954. Sounds like it will be too small a motor, though. I'd look for at least a 10 hp.

Re: will this work?

Thanks, all. I'll be keeping my eyes open for either a 7.5 or a 10. The season is still a few months away here in Chicago, so I'm not in any serious rush. right now i'm watching an auction for a 10hp on ebay that popped up.

Post a free ad over at AOMCI.org. You can get a good one real cheap. I just bought two QD's a 1954 & 1955. Both have great paint and decals. Both run. $125 CDN.

Re: will this work?

just thought of something. you do know you are going to have to have a 2 line pressure tank or convert the motor to a fuel pump. tanks are going from $40 up on ebay, then possibly have to rebuild.

Yes, I know that I will need a pressurized tank or convert it. I'll see what is available as far as motors go. Many come with the tank that I have seen. Preferably, I'd like to convert it. But I'll see when I find something.

Re: will this work?

Some years I was in a fishing club where almost everyone had a 10hp
motor on their fishing boat for trolling. There were always a couple boats
with 7.5hp motors. The difference between the 7.5 and 10 hp motors was
very significant. The 10hp would get most fishing boats up on plane, but
the 7.5 would not. The only advantage that the 7.5 had was in gas usage,
and those guys usually trolled all day long. You could do that
with a 10hp too, and the gas usage difference was not that great.

I came by a '59 Johnson 10hp motor, and that motor was the fastest
and most powerful 10hp motor of them all! I had a good few years with it.
Your 14' fiberglass boat will putter around fine with a 7.5, and that's it.
A 10hp might plane it, but more than likely it will just get close to that.
Good luck in your motor search.

Re: will this work?

Just picked up a 10hp Evinrude I won on ebay for $163. Upon visual inspection, it looks very clean. Will need to start it in spring to see if there are any issues. Just a question, I need to know if my current shop manuals cover this motor, so I need to know the year. Does anyone know the year for serial number 10012-10626?
