Re: Where to start?

That is a junk, give me your address and I will junk it for you :D
You are luuuuukkyy! Given all the info you have given here, I will tell you to take it to a pro. You are wayyy ahead money wise. Do not attempt a repair like that in a boat that nice. In the future as you gain experience and learn your motor then it will be alright. Take it to the pro and let us know what he said. Also, when you are taking your photos try to get them 800 wide by 600 tall on landscape photos and the other way around for portrait. It gives more details.

Re: Where to start?

motor was covered....I don't know if it is even fuel injected but what ever the piece is over the piston is missing

Motor looks clean I havnt tried to spin the flywheel yet. Also there is no ignition switch

hello,

if it was mine and plug hole(s) were left open, :eek:i would NOT turn it until i had squirted some 30wt oil in each hole. not pre-mix, but 30wr! air blow it around. squirt it to N S E W quadrants... the oil cant hurt and will help with the sudden movement. and i would have all plugs out.

i would air blow each hole first at least at 100 psi

the engine needs some careful review before it tis rotated to be safe. key word... safe.

good luck

Re: Where to start?

Wow some great advice here!!!

I think this will be my plan..... I will get a pro to look at the engine maybe get a estimate to get it to run.

I will try to tackle the boat itself.... throttle, gauges, electrical and cleaning. It doesn't have the seats mounted but they are in the cuddy so I can do that. I will try to get the pumps to work it also needs all new electronics. it is missing some storage covers. Also has two down riggers that need to be installed.

I will try to get some new pictures on here at the right size, those were just what my wife took and I had a hard time making them small enough to post well.

Oh something else I don't know if I have anything to actually pull this boat my largest vehicle is a 03 ford explorer. I am guessing that it is about 10-15 miles to the ramp.

Re: Where to start?

I pull mine with a V6 Xterra. The Xterra is WAY too small to pull it. I too go 5 miles to the ramp and the Xterra and my wife ,it's her truck, let me know about it every mile...I'm not sure which is worse. I need to upgrade to a V8 something, this Feb (lease is up on my car). The boat is in the neighborhood of 5500lbs-6000lbs depending on fuel and gear, so check your trucks specs. Don't make your free boat turn into an expensive truck.

Re: Where to start?

Thanks I will take a look at the specs soon might have to find me a beater truck just to pull the boat. This is what I found for the specs

Max towing capacity, properly equipped

V-6 4x2: 5780

I am thinking that the engine is blown on this thing! I cant get the flywheel to even budge. I can feel my bank account dropping even as I sit here.

Re: Where to start?

I'm sorry mikem0011:
I can see you really got snookered on that one, but as we here are most generous chumps, for the low, low price of $2500 I will trapes down from here in the Nations and haul that piece of junk off of your hands. Good fella ain't I?

Of course you could spend the same bucks and overhaul the Evinrude, or buy another and part out what you have and sell it on E-Bay and recoup your money, or buy a new engine (sucking up the dollar loss, but enjoying the reliability and warrenty) or blow it on wine , women and song. Hows that for a long winded sentence? Wine is temporary and so is song. A good woman will last a long time, but is far more expensive than a good boat. Make your choice.:D

Seriously, I think it is well worth the time and trouble to get her back in the briney. If the engine is beyond economical rebuild, then part it out and buy a good used engine of the same power. You might check out how much it would cost to replace the powerhead starting right here on iBoats.

Yet......If you want, I can be persuaded to come down and take her off your hands for the right amount of money.

Re: Where to start?

Just to let you know I paid $14,000 for the same boat and trailer delivered. My Johnson had 375 hours and the boat was just shy of excelent condition. At least you know what you have. However, if this is your first boat, you may consider the cost of repair and getting her the way you want added to that a vehicle to tow, You may want to part her out and use the money to get on the water. You will not end up with the same size and type but be able to "get your feet wet" with something your explorer can handle. Just a thought but what you there is a good boat. 3-5k should get her just right.

Mike - I can tell you that you can pull that rig with a 93 Explorer but it will be scary and not necessarily all that safe. I pulled my 23' CC with twins on the back for a few years with one on relatively short distancess over flat terrain and I never felt comfortable. I got a 99 Yukon with the 5.7L and scarcely know it is back there now.

The engine not turning over might be the lower unit locked up too. Don't despair-yet.

It's a nice boat, worth fixing up. Many of the parts on the engine could bring some reasonable $$$.

Re: Where to start?

It is your decision but again, you have a one in a lifetime gift... I assure you that you can fix that boat, sell it and make money if you decide you dont want to get a vehicle to be able to pull it.
I will leave it at that...

Re: Where to start?

OK seems to be I have a nice boat here.
The truck pulling thing is not to big of an issue this is the first time in my life that I have not owned a pick up and I miss not having one...here is my excuse!!!

So even if I dropped 6 or 7 grand into this boat I am still ahead money wise?

I am not totally new to boats I grew up on a lake and always had them, they just weren't my boats.

Any Engine can be repaired right? If you are willing to sink enough money into it. At what point would this engine not be worth it and to just get a used motor would be better? I have been looking around and have seen that a used (rebuilt) 225 is going for around $10,000 give or take $1500.

I have also read that to totally rebuild this engine would be about $3000 to $4000 I don't know what the difference would be too buy a rebuild for 10 or rebuild mine for 4?

I do have a mechanic coming out to look at it but would like to know the answer to this question before he arrives.

Also just wanted to say thank you to everyone, this site has been great. I really thought it would be hard to get people to talk boats in the middle of January.

Re: Where to start?

Wow - great find! Well, I wouldn't sweat it too much right now. I would get some oil in those cylinders and see if she'll budge. I would even let some soak in there overnight. If you still can't get it to budge, you can probably find a nice used motor for WAY cheaper than a whole new boat - so, you're ahead of the game. Congrats, and like everyone keeps saying on here, read around the iboats forums. You will learn SOOOO much! I definitly have!

Re: Where to start?

Well....... trying to get the trailer all fixed up and registered. I was going to have a mobile mechanic come out to look at it but he doesn't do rebuilds so if it does need to be rebuilt I would have to take it to the shop anyway. He wants 85 an hour with a 35 dollar trip charge, where if I take it to the shop I can get a free estimate.
