I just picked up a boat for real cheap, and it has a 70 horse evenrude on it, but there is no key. Is there a way around the key, or do I have to tear down the control box and put a new key in it? Also... the steering wheel says morse control on it. I can't get it to turn the motor. does the key have to turn the motor? Thanks for the help in advance.

The steering and the engine control box are seperate systems.

Got a picture?

Cmuman,
Where did you find the boat at? If ti is the one in GCS the steering cable is broken and froze up at the engine it wil need replacing, as far as the key it is as easy as replacing the ignition switch.

gcs?

I got the boat from a friend here in michigan. It seems like I can hear the cable trying to move midway down the line, but the engine end is doing nothing. How do I get the cable off? I looked under the dash and it seems to have some linear gear system tied to a cable. Do I replace the cable or the whole unit? I will try to post pics tomorrow.

Correct. If it is an OMC control box, you can get a key at a John/Rude dealer. There is usually a two digit code on the ignition switch near the key slot.

Get a buddy to give you a hand, while he is turning the wheel, not forcing it or with a lot of pressure just turning it as you mentioned it moves halfway down, you can inspect the steering cable, most likely you will find the outside sheath is either broken or has a hole in it and the cable is pushing out of the sheath instead of turning the engine.

Give it a good visual inspection and see what you find. the few steering assemblies I have worked on required me to take the steering wheel off and basicly dissamble the whole unit to remove it from the control console.

It is not that hard of a task just pay attention to how you remove it and use some lubrication type oil on the hardware so as not to break them from torque as most of the ones I removed were corroded, but I am in a salt environment and maybe you will not have the problem in Michigan.

If you have to replace the cable I would take old cable in to the dealer to make sure you get exact replacement as there are many different types of steering assemblies and most will not interchange.

Before you break something, disconnect the steering link at the engine. Now pivot the engine side to side. If it moves freely, those pivots are ok. Now look at the tilt tube and the rod that passes through it (the steering link is on the end of that rod). Very often the rod is corroded inside the tilt tube. Get some PB Blaster or other penetrating oil in there and "easily" work the wheel to see if it moves at all. Loosen the large nut where the cable screws onto the tilt tube and see if you can move the cable and rod in the tilt tube. If the rod (cable end) doesn't move it will need some additional soaking and a little twisting and pushing to free it up. if it appears free in the tilt tube then the cable needs replacing. There is usually a keeper on the helm that allows removal of the cable.

dj is that code on the key assembly itself, or do I have to open the control box to find it?

Look around the bezel where the key goes in. There is usually a two digit code there. If it is an aftermarket switch, you're out of luck.

Replacing the switch is not difficult, or expensive, just do it ONE wire at a time. Don't ask me how I know this.:D

The problem seems to be in the cable. I will work on removing or freeing it up tomorrow. Too dark to see the key code. Will look for it tomorrow. Thanks a bunch.

I found a 66 on the bezel. Thats great. Is there anywhere on line that I can order one of those keys?

Your local OMC/Bombardier dealer will either have it or can order it.

Re: Morse controls. Do I need a key.

A good locksmith can make one from the code (66) if you can figure out what brand the switch is. Chicago Lock made a lot of them for OMC, but their numbers are typicaly KF-xx. There is another real popular brand, but my brain isn't in recall mode right now. If I think of it, I'll post it.
EDIT: Pollak. Might be spelled wrong.

Where can I find out who made the lock. Is there a code or a tag somewhere?

Key Number 66 is OMC/BRP part number 501815. See your dealer or order online. Less than $5.00 usually.

KF-66 is 501581.

sea-way .com or ishopmarine .com. You would save shipping/handling cost by contacting a local dealer:

Re: Morse controls. Do I need a key.

I've received the keys that I thought were the right ones. I uncovered the controls of my boat in the snow to try to see if this key works. I went with the kf66 key from ishopmarine.com It wont even go in the tumbler. Attached if a photo of the key I just received (left) to the key from my other boat (right). The single sided key will slide in the tumbler but not turn obviously because it if for a diferent boat. (1980 evinrude 35hp). The end of the tumbler on my boat said 66. Did I miss something? Any other input?

Thanks a bunch

KF keys are two sided. The chart that I gave you before is for the earlier mostly one sided OMC keys.

I see what I did wrong. I orderded the kf instead of the 501815 that I should have ordered. Oops
