with the big boat broke, (simple throttle cable, waiting for it to show up) and the little boat getting a full restore, I was left with nothing more then a canoe to go boating with this weekend, it was my first time out with it, I had a blast, I paddled my little behind all over the lake, it was a beautiful day for it, I got some pictures, and was just wondering if anyone else in the forums goes canoing.

no, I haven't ...yet, but give me time, maybe I can get a good one at the very moment everything comes flipping out of the canoe and the very second I splash into the water

Canoeing is probably my favorite form of boating when I'm alone. I don't get to do enough of it though, that's for sure.

I canoed a lot as a youngster.

Still my favorite way to cover a small southern, lilypad covered pond for bass and bluegills with a flyrod.

I still have a desire to build a cedar strip canoe for that purpose. :)

Canoeing is a blast. :)
There are numerous lakes in the UP that are paddles only and you must portage in quite a distance so the canoe is a must.
These lakes are very quiet and pleasant.

that's what I noticed when I was out canoing, the lake was still closed for the winter, so the boat ramps were closed, and I spent the afternoon out there and only saw a couple of Kayakers, and it was really quiet, don't get that in the power boats with an outboard running on the back, I admit though, I got tired of paddling, I do have a small electric outboard for it that I picked up at a garage sale last summer for 5 bucks, it was still new in the box, it's a little one for one of those sevylor rafts, but I think it might adapt nicely to the canoe, it won't move it very fast, but any movement is better then none at all.

I didn't see any canoing threads at iboats, so I wasn't sure if I was making my last act of defiance or not by posting something here about canoing, I love going out with the other boats, but I thought this canoe excursion was a nice change of pace, not something I'd want to do every time I hit the water, but it was a nice change of pace.

Re: any canoe people here?

My scout troop goes canoeing about once a year.

Last year, I bought two 17 foot Grumman canoes for 100 bucks a piece, and then resold one for 325, and another for 275. I want a square stern 17 foot Grumman canoe to run my little Johnnyrude 3s and 5s.

Anyway, late last night, my troop got back from a 3 day canoeing trip on the Suwannee River, in northern Florida. We did 40 somethin' miles in 3 days.

I loved to canoe. We did alot in scouts. Made three trips to the boundary waters and into Canada. College room mate had a 15 foot fiberglass that was one fast canoe, but very easy to tip over.

I bought a 17 footer, but the kids do not like going.

That’s some serious paddling, I maybe made it a couple of miles in about 3 hours, but I was playing around to, getting out, sight seeing, ect.

I did a search of canoe's here and about the only thing I found was how someone cut one in half and used it for book shelves, so I wasn't sure if I should be fessing up to owning a canoe or not, I did get a good deal on it, I helped a co-worker sell his pickup, and he gave me the canoe when the deal was done, it was a complete surprise to me, IO had planed on borrowing it from him come summer, (he's going to use my 12 foot boat for fishing) so we were going to do some swapping around, but he gave it to me instead, so to me, it's free, and good exercise, and I'm thinking beins how I like to camp a lot, maybe throw it on top of the car and go hit some lakes this summer.

Not a canoer, but I love sea kayaking. I currently have 2 sea kayaks and 2 smaller "recreational" kayaks. I paddle weekly in-season with a club here on the Chesapeake. Since gas prices have been so high over the past few years I've actually been paddling more than powerboating.
The nature you can see paddling is simply amazing, and it's a lot of fun- not to mention healthy for you.
I occasionally use the big boat as a "mothership", carrying up to 4 kayaks to places around the Bay that would be difficult to access any other way.

We used to do it when we were younger. The west fork of the Des Moines river runs near here and you can rent canoes and go down that. There is a creek in my back yard that is high enough in the spring to canoe too.

Funny story. My sister used to love to go up to the boundary waters area and canoe. Most of that is closed off to any type of motors. She had a Ford Maverick at the time and she would put two canoes on the top and drive up there. The canoes were longer then the car and would stick off both ends. It was funny looking as heck. We gave her lots of grief and told here that when she got there all she had to do was tip the whole thing up side down and taker here car canoeing with her. :D

I got 2 canoes , and , 2 kayaks .
They are great for those small cricks , and , skinny waters where you can't get a bigger craft , or , you need the edge of stealth .

Nothing like getting pulled around a small hole in a creek by that big holdover rainbow , or that monster smallie .

They are also great for deer and duck hunting as you can slip silently into some otherwise innaccesable habitat. And if you get lucky and bag a deer it sure beats draggin one several miles out!

Re: any canoe people here?

Have done at least a 4 day trip every summer on different Michigan rivers, 4 of the last 5 years. Longest so far was the first, the Ausable 120+ mi in just over 4 days. Did that one again, with a couple of newbies, 2 years later but went slower to enjoy the time out more. (You really want to see crazy canoes looking up the AuSable Canoe Marathon, they cover the length in less than 24 hours starting in the middle of the night.) This year the plan is to cover the Manistee . We have also done the Fox/Manistique in the UP, that was a short but hard river to tangle with. After this year the plan is to head up to Canada and take on the Chapleau. If you enjoy it at all I highly suggest doing at least one overnighter the early morning paddle is the best part of the day.

Re: any canoe people here?

Haven't been able to canoe in many years, for several reasons. In the early 1970's I introduced my wife to camping by canoeing in the Boudary Waters. (tactical blunder: should have eased her into it a bit more). Anyway, thoroughly enjoyed it. Motors etc prohibited, for over a week the only time we saw other people was at a portage a couple times.

My wife said she really enjoyed it during the day, but was so afraid of bears she insisted we camp on islands. Only after we were back home a week later did I tell her bears are excellent swimmers.:p

If I could, I'd love to do that again.

There are lots of rives in Michigan to canoe on, and we sometimes do, but you can't make a circlular route and end up back where you started like you can in the Boudary Waters.

Fond memories. Thanks.

Last fall I finished building the 'Cheap Canoe' from Bateau.com. I haven't had it out yet, but next spring I plan on hitting some of the local rivers and streams for some paddling and fishing.

Re: any canoe people here?

it sounds to me like canoing (at least from what I'm reading) is enjoyed by many on the threads, I'll be going out again, next time I'll have the electric outboard with me, (just in case I get tired of paddling my rear all over the lake) thanks for the great stores and reading.

Re: any canoe people here?

No canoes, but we used to do some white water kayaking. Mostly class I, II, and III with an occasional IV (East of the Miss.). Nothing too scary. Water does some amazing things when it flows over, around, and through obstacles. Once you begin to understand how these things work it's amazing how you can use these features to your advantage. It's really indescribable, but if you've ever experienced it, you know what I mean. We don't have our kayaks anymore because it's a good 4 hour drive to get to some decent rivers. I really miss it.

You can't get a better ratio of fun/dollar than you can in a canoe.
