Hey guys - I am rebuilding a Ford 302 for marine application and I have a few questions. The engine is going in a Seaswirl Striper and will be used in saltwater. The engine will have a closed cooling system.

1. The engine currently has a cast iron 2 bbl intake which is pretty rough. Would there be any problems switching to an aluminum 4 bbl? Does anyone know where I can get a replacement iron manifold?

2. I am replacing the exhaust manifolds but have heard bad things about the GLM manifolds. Should I stick with OEM or can I get away with the GLM? Do the GLM manifolds support a complete closed coolig system? Where can I get some OEM manifolds?

Thanks!

You could look on ebay, but cast 4 barrel 302 manifolds are rare....
If you are going close cooled, you can go aftermarket....;)

The problems with the GLM were the mating surfaces, they need to be checked & possibly milled for trueness.....
I don't see why they would not support a full closed system.....
You never said what style mani's you are looking for, but for the older log style mercs, you will need to go after market......;)

Oops! These are the style that I'm looking at:

Oh BTW, what are your thoughts on using an automotive waterpump with a closed cooling system?

Thanks!

I am not familiar with the Volvo set up as far as the bolt on peripherals, but I would imagine they are designed for that....
Call Dennis Moore to be certain.....
I would have to say you can get by with an auto pump, but I personally would stick with the marine versoin as they are a bit more sturdy in the innards....;)

Try EBay for the intake manifold. I would shy away from aluminum because some individuals might not paint/maintain the engine over the life of the boat used in saltwater. I would use the marine pump, once you start rationalising "It'll be okay" it never stops.

Just a note here, I used an auto water pump off a 302, for my 888 Mercruiser years ago, and had to remove the 2 pressed in heater hose outlets to get it to fit on the block, they were in the way! (not easy to remove either), but also the marine pumps have a stainless back plate, that's what makes them so unique, & expensive, Switch yours if you have a marine one, I don't know what other differences there maybe, but it did work for me.

Before you get any manifolds, what make drive and year do you have?
You won't be able to use those manifolds if you have a Mercruiser. They aren't all interchangable.
The engine cirulation pumps also have better bearings for contant higher rpms than automotive.

The drive is a 1992 OMC Cobra. The manifolds/risers that were on the engine are Volvo Penta # 3357402.

junk yard for a good cast iron 4bbl intake, you'll have to block off the egr port unless you can find a early one. If its a closed system would think alum would be fine.

No problem with those manifolds and risers. Thought maybe you just seen the 302 Ford part and may have not realized they are not the same for all makes. Volvo bought out OMC Sterndrive section and used the same manifolds and risers.
An aluminum intake will work great with a closed cooling system. Just make sure you paint it to prevent corrosion on the outside. Especially if ever around salt water.
A good clear coat will also work fine. Especially in fresh water.

Thanks for the info guys!

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement iron timing cover? I can only find aluminum ones.

With closed cooling in the motor just clear coat , epoxy, etc. paint it

I've only seen cast iron timing cover on marine engines. Might find them on engines used in industry also.

Do you think there would be a problem using an aluminum timing cover? The front engine mount bracket bolts to it.

Time for pictures, there is no front motor mount on a 302 that I am aware of.

I do not have a 302, have a 351w and thats where you mount the alt bracket. I.m surprised it mounts there and not the block. What happened to the old one? I believe the alum timing covers do not have the mounting plate on them not 100% sure.

Had to do some research on that, seems that type front mount was only used on the 91 and 92 engines. Before and after that they used the normal block mounts.

Ford V8 engines were used in 1991-1992?

OMC used them a lot with Cobra drives, then when OMC and Volvo went into the joint venture they used them. But only 94 and 95. Then Ford was dropped completely.
