Word from home came today and it was all bad. My (used to be) best friend used my 1977, 15 HP Johnson to do some striper fishing yesterday and lost the engine overboard. He said it just jumped off the transom into the drink. He said that he looked up it's value on NADA, and found that it was only worth $65. I told him that I'd like to see him by a 1977, 15 HP for $65, $165, $265, or $365. That engine ran like the wind and always started on the second pull. It served me well for over 30 years.

That is too bad, so sorry.

I hope he pulled it out? It can possibly still be saved.

Nope, he said she sunk in 30' of brackish water that was so filed with sediment that he couldn't see down five feet.

Yup, 701.00 and has fuel delivery problems ...(fuel pump, un-vented tank, carb float etc) Gees, you'd think that if you're going to make a movie , you'd at least make it run good.

Obtain documents to prove what it would cost to replace that engine, then take your fair weather friend to small claims court.

He claims the engine twisted off the boat. If so, he neglected to tighten the clamp screws that would attach the engine to the transom. However, as it appears, you have only his word that this is what took place..... and frankly I wouldn't put too much stock in the word of a person who would do what he did. It's possible that the engine is missing due to other causes..... think about it.

I have similar thoughts to JB on this. Motors can be replaced best friends are a lot harder to come by. I know, I lost one recently to a car wreck, loosing a motor would have been much preffered. Anyway, thats my two bits. I hope this works out for you, and your best friend.

I hate to be cynical, (well, maybe) but that was my thought too. No proof other than his word, but a shrug of the shoulders and "here's 65 bucks" doesn't sound like much of a friend to me. I wonder what boat that engine ended up on......

Nightstalker....I think there are a few things missing from your original post. Are you saying your friend is only willing to pay the 65.00 or are you saying he just looked it up not really knowing that the book value isn't the actual replacement cost? How long has he been your friend? How good of a friend is he? What is his character like? Plus at least 10 other questions regarding you, him, and the situation. Too many unanswered questions for anyone to give a realistic opinion of the situation. (In my opinion)

I do agree that good friends are harder to replace than motors but I've also had some friends that I would gladly trade in for a motor. (Even a Chrysler!)

Good luck

Yeah, that last part also applies to BIL's. :) Can't tell where you are, but check to see if there is an AOMCI club in your area. Spring/summer swap meets are coming up...always a bargain to be found at those. Check the AOMCI site at aomci.org
If your buddy doesn't offer to replace it, I'd replace him or at least cancel his borrowing privileges in the future...unless he knows some cute chicks.

Stuff happens. A true friend will replace your motor with one of equivalent value. Lets see if he steps up. The motor can easily be replaced, just costs $$.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Re: Can't fix this Johnny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i have always believed when you borrow something, you return it in better shape than you got. if just cleaning it. loaned a tiller out, you should have seen the mess i got back, only took 10 minutes for me to fix.
i don't loan my boat, car & women, in that order.

Did the friend borrow boat, and engine, or just the engine?

Re: Can't fix this Johnny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a friend, a good friend; we were Army roommates some 30 years ago. We fish a tournament every year at a lake near his house, about 3 hrs drive from me. One year he could not make it and offered to let me use his boat so I didn?t have to tow mine up there. I declined because stuff happens. If something happened to his boat I would have felt obligated to fix it. Give your friend time to come around, if a good friend he?ll make it right.

Hmm, I'm not sure where they're getting their prices from. I sure would love to buy outboards for that cheap. My 85hp is listed for $85 average, that would be awesome.

In case you ever thought of getting a bigger motor, this is your chance for a justified upgrade ;).

One other thing I would mention to your friend. I have never had this problem, but just in case, I always chain it to the boat. If you are just concerned about losing it in the water, a simple cable and clamp to the boat, would suffice. Since I am also worried about security, I chain mine with a padlock.

This is the very next thing I do, once I tighten up the motor clamps on my transom and it is for this very reason. It may still get wet, but it won't get lost.

Re: Can't fix this Johnny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To the people talking about a friend being harder to replace than a motor:

A real friend would make the situation right. A real friend wouldn't offer up $65 for the motor, they would replace it with something AT LEAST comparable. Even if they couldn't do it right away, they would make concessions towards getting the problem corrected.

I do not keep friends around that would try something like that on me. There are too many good people in the world to keep around you than to feel obligated to keep a snake like this around because "a best friend is hard to replace."

Sorry to hear about your motor. Hopefully you can do something to get him to come up with the money to replace it. All he really has to do is to deny ever borrowing the motor and you are pretty much stuck.

Test his story. Where abouts did it happen? How did he get back to dock? See if there are any open ends.
