i have a 1975 eldocraft w a 1975 50 hp evinrude on it. i had to quickly jam it in reverse the other day and now its stuck in reverse. i took the hood off and the shift linkage that i can see appears to be moving correctly. its in reverse at all times, when the shifter is put in the forward pos the engine revs much higher just as it would when the motor is in forward. while i am mechanically inclined, i am new to outboard motor repair. anyone have any advice?

Re: stuck in reverse

Hopefully in your haste to quickly jam the engine into reverse, you simply had the shift control cable trunion at thge engine jump out of its retaining clamp.... worth taking a look at.

If the above is where it should be, disconnect the shift cable from the engine's shift linkage. If you can now shift the engine properly by manually shifting with the engine shift linkage, the problem would be with the controls. However, if the problem persists, I would assume that something within the lower unit is not as it should be.

Let us know what you find.

Re: stuck in reverse

check you connections at the motor, remove the connections, and shift the motor manually. if it had original cables the cable could be shot.

Re: stuck in reverse

well the shift control cables were intact at the retaining clip i removed them from the motor and moved the shift lever manually back and forth. it moved very freely with no felt notches, as if it wasnt connected to anything, i didnt take that as a good sign.

Not that difficult if you have a manual.

Re: stuck in reverse

make sure the o ring is in the groove at the top of the drive shaft, and that the water tube lines up.
