Draining lower unit oil - quick question with picture.

Is this the right color for Hi-Vis OMC Gear Oil after you drain it? I have about a year of use with this oil?

Does it look like water has got into the lower unit?

At one point during the season, my shift rod linkage became loose, I tightened the nuts the same day after I got the boat out of the water, if it looks like water did get in my lower unit, could that have caused it?

Yep that is water - sorry. Before you take out all your tools or head to the bank to get a loan for a rebuild replace both of the o rings (or gaskets) for the fill & drain plugs, fill it with new oil, run it & check again. Those silly o rings are the most common cause of water leaks.

great, that's all I needed to hear right now..

Thanks for the reply, I'll pick up those plastic o-rings and try that, I really hope that's all it is...Is the Walmart lower unit oil (80W-90) ok for my 93' Evinrude 30hp?

Walmart oil is just fine as long as it's outboard gear oil and not gear oil from their garage. As far as the drain/vent gaskets, the type you need depends on the type of drain screw. They used 3 different ones. If the sealing surface of the screw head is flat, you need a paper washer(gasket); if it has a raised ridge, you need the nylon washers; if it has a groove on the sealing surface, you need an o-ring.

ok, at least I have the right oil now :)

Here is the picture of the drain hole and the drain screws, I have the nylon washers on there, are they the right ones? I replaced them last year too, but you say theres a change of water getting through them?

Thanks

Those washers do look like they are in good condition and the fact that you changed them last year might mean bad news for you.

There is a chance of water getting through there if the seals are bad.

What are my options? Either rebuild the lower unit or get a new one? What do you recommend?

There are seals behind the propeller on the prop shaft that can be changed. I have not done this before but someone will reply with more experience on it.

I don't think a new lower unit is needed.

While looking at the drain screw, I noticed a very small portion of the thread has a small dent in it, could that also cause the leakage?

I think I'll pick up new drain screws and washers tomorrow from the marine shop before I start worrying too much. I'll reply back here and let you know how it goes, thanks for all the input!

Could you explain a little more? How do I keep the compressed air in the lower unit once I get it in? where are the seals located that I should soap up? Can I sit the lower unit in a bucket?

Thanks!

Here is a link to a question about pressure testing a lower unit. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=88919

You will need some tools that you may not have.

If you do not have the tools for this just do as you suggested, replace the screws and washers and check it again. Hopefully thats all it is.

Post your results and we can help you from there.

You might want to pull the prop and check for fish line. If there is line present, the seal may be cut.

Thanks for the idea, I pulled the prop, no fishing line, no visible leaks either.

Re: Draining lower unit oil - quick question with picture.

Took the boat out this morning on a test run, brought it back home and can see that there is still water in the oil in the gear case.

I'll remove the gear case from the outboard, any advise on what to look for next would be very helpful.

Also, what's included in the Evinrude gearcase seal kit (p/n 396351)? If I install all the seals included with this kit is there a good chance that could fix my problem? Do I need to fully disassemble my gearcase following the manual to replace the seals? I am also going to replace the impeller while I have it all apart.

Thanks!

If it looks like Bailey's Irish Cream then there is water in there. If the drain / filll seals do not cure it then you have another seal gone somewhere. Must replace it or you will be in bigger trouble.

I finally got the thrust bushing off and the bearing housing, how much more do I need to take off to replace all the seals & O-rings included in the gear case Seal Kit?

what year and model motor is it?

If you go to www.Johnson.com You can find a diagram of your lower unit that will show all the seals and how they go together.

It is under parts and accessories and then Literature. Just ignore the part where is asks you to log in or enter your email address.
