Re: need power head omc sea drive

if its has the big hump "bubble" on the back its probably a 140. If you look on ebay I've seen two sea drives for sale pretty cheap...one is a complete setup and has good compression. I think its a 140 also. Well nevermind I guess they already sold. I was going to post links to them but they are gone. If you'll watch you'll see them on there. I think that powerhead is interchangable with the others...I'm not positive...isn't the seadrive just the tilt/trim and pivot?? I may be way off on that. The ones I've seen, the powerheads look alot alike. Good luck.

something else...whate is exactly wrong with it?? lost compression?? have you had the heads off? they'll be alot of folks that chime in if you'll put that. On here they really like to know what the problems are and they'll give you your best route to go. Cost is pretty high when you start having to sleeve cylinders, bore, use oversize pistons....cheaper many times to just find a decent used powerhead. These things are high to rebuild if you've got much damage to the cylinders.

And yes sea drive is the bracket with the trim and tilt motor bolts to that.

Re: need power head omc sea drive

if its flat on the on the back....area between the cylinders...probably 85,90,115,..if its got a big bubble there they call that a bubble back and is a 140. What are your compression numbers?? what did the place tell you they would do on the rebuild?? just rebuild the one cylinder or all?? There is another...not sea drive...but 140 on ebay right now...has 110psi on all four..its in florida too. Its an evinrude, not very pretty...but says its in good shape...his reserve is 499 and its a 153 now...its over tommorrow. its a relist...bet you could get it. post on here again for dhadley, tashadaddy, ezeke...I know there are MANY more that know but I've delt with these alot and I know they are very knowledgable on these engines and can tell you if the powerhead would bolt up. thats the route I would go..and get a manual. kencook.com you can get a OMC/Johnson/Evinvrude manual...not the one that covers a bunch of years...although I would wait and see about the powerhead first. You also need to rebuild the waterpump and I would do the thermostats before I did anything else with it...just to be sure. I would rather see you get a good used motor and part your seadrive together and save a little money than put that much money in that motor. you are in the right place for advice...MANY rebuilders here...and LOTS of years experience.

another name is joe reeves...I know I'm leaving folks out and I'm sorry...I'm at school and on and off here...first ones to come to mind. Send a message to them...or repost and put there names in the subject line....you may also try starting a new thread with the subject...."will other powerheads work on a seadrive"....you still have a day...I know some of them will chime in...they always do.

Re: need power head omc sea drive

I hear that...tashadaddy will know...he has helped me many times...ecspecially when I was working on my 140 last year. I think he is online right now too. I'm ready to get out there myself....the bass are getting on beds...going with some buddies tonight. I sent that guy a message about that motor yesterday asking if it was a saltwater engine and hadn't gotten a response from him. Hope he calls you. I think that is an early 80's motor...I couldn't tell from the pic...not the best. If you could get it for the buy it now or cheaper you could paint and psi test that lower unit and paint the mid and t/t unit and probably make money out of the deal. lol. Let me know what tasha says...I'm interested also...alot of times you see the seadrives pretty cheap, I think because they are pretty rare and its badged OMC instead of johnson/evinrude isn't it?? If they'll interchange I could probably get a powerhead to piddle with.

Re: need power head omc sea drive

BTW, that is not a 1990 140HP engine. It is a crossflow. The 115HP crossflow engines after 1984 have bubbleback exhausts after the reclassification.

Re: need power head omc sea drive

I have a pair of 1987 bubbleback 1.6L SeaDrives. When they came out OMC did not advertise the hp. I do have the factory service manuals and it states that these are 110 hp engines.

As to what engines will fit - there are a few posts on this in our iboat history. Use the Search function and go hunting. Dhadley I think did a couple of posts on this.

I have had my rig for 12 years and have had zero problems with the SeaDrives.

Re: need power head omc sea drive

The SeaDrive powerheads are pretty much the same as the non SeaDrive units. There is a difference in the engine mount I think in some years (see Dhadley post). Also the linkages for gear shift & throttle are different. The SeaDrives have a "universal joint thing" in the linkage.

I recommend that you get the OMC manual specific for your year. It is very thorough and detailed as you would expect - get the parts manual also as it has part numbers and parts explosion diagrams. OMC even has different manuals for the hydraulic vs. non-hydraulic units.
