The key fob for my truck stopped working the other day SO naturally I thought that it needed a new battery. Got a new battery, installed it and the damn thing still doesnt work. I went through the steps of reprogramming it to the truck and it still doesnt work. Anyone know of any way to test the thing to see if its still transmitting?

sometimes its best to take it to the dealer and have them manualy acess the bcm module with there scanner to program it. i was a mech at a dodge dealer for years and ran into that many times. although the owners manual can be confusing with the steps at times with the combinations of buttons to hit. a dodge will let you know when you succsessfully entered the bcm to program when you here a chime. is chevy the same way?

Yeah, try the other one they gave you. If it works, the one you have is bad. If it doesn't work, the problem is with the car, not the transmitter.

Panic button ...horn honks it's working .....not get the owners manual out or ask your dealer the procedure for your vehicle

Re: GM Remote Key Fob

I followed the steps below and it went fine up until step 7. I passed a GM dealership in my work truck, stopped and asked if they had a way of testing the little transmitter. They did and said mine was good I just needed to bring the truck by and let them hook it up to a machine to the tune of $40.

1. Close doors.

2. Insert key, do not turn.

3. Press and hold door lock switch in the unlock position ( on the door).

4. Switch ignition on, off, on, off (or on, lock, on, lock) Note on does not mean Start.

5. Release door lock switch.

6. Doors should lock and unlock one time to confirm programming mode.

7. Simultaneously press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons of the first remote transmitter for 15 seconds.

8. Doors should lock and unlock to confirm programming of the first remote transmitter.

9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 for all remaining transmitters.

10. Switch ingnition ON to exit programming mode.

Re: GM Remote Key Fob

Every once in while the remote key for 99 (early 2k) model Chev Silverdao Z71, doesn't seem to want to work. I just ignore it and use the key like a key and within the next couple times I use the truck, it works just great.
Is it possible that it repograms itself?

I'm a cheapskate. For 40 bucks I think I would have just used the old fashion mechanical key.

why?
those aren't the steps for my GM

Not sure what year model yours is but thats what came out of my manual. In your other post you mentioned something about a Caddillac. This is an 03' Z71.

I had the thing tested at AutoZone.....it was not transmitting. I guess I'll buy a new one when I get tired of using a key.
