hi everyone
new here..
I have a 1991 evinrude 20hp doesn't want to start, its starts sometimes but cutoffs when you give it gas, but never had a chance to put this baby in the lake..i took it out to the lake and it didin't want to start..the fuel line was leaking by the primer bulb so i came home put new clamps on and start it and it fired up ran it for about 5 min, shut it off and start it again and it started find.
Two days after i was getting ready to got out to the lake it didn't want to start, I really don't know much about boats or boat engines, but as i can see there is a leak coming from the fuel primer solenoid, when you choke it at the ignition you can see fuel squirting from the solenoid on the red valve, so what i think it might be is that I 'm losing fuel pressure and not starting..by the way what octane of gas should I use , i have 89 octane in my gas tank right now,Any help will be much appreciated...Thanks

Re: engine problems

Everything is fine...The solenoid is the one with the red lever right? If it leaks then its bad right? Should i replace the whole solenoid or should i just replace the gaskets..Thats the only fuel leak i see as of right now. Also do any of you know about how much this part will cost? Thanks

Re: engine problems

what is the model # of your motor, diagrams do not show a 91 20hp with the primer solenoid. shows manual primer. yes if it is leaking it needs to be repaired, rebuild, or replaced. 99% chance it is leaking into the intake also, flooding the motor.

Re: engine problems

I see the solenoid on the intake manifold diagram. At $160. +/- you might want to consider the repair kit.

Make sure that the lever on the primer solenoid is lined up with the cylinder or it will keep letting fuel through when you don't want it to.

Re: engine problems

How do you line it up, is it straight down? In the run position right?
If this is the problem, my engine won't start right? Is that why it cuts out on me because its not getting enough gas and its losing pressure? What do you think?

YES according to my repair manual. I did that the other day and it still leak, do you think it might just be the o-ring thats bad. Can i just change that and see what happens?

Re: engine problems

i check it. The red lever on the fuel primer is crack so its leaking, will that cause it not to start? Will the one on ebay work, mine looks like the one on your post. with the stem and a cap. let me know guys, Thanks

Re: engine problems

the one on ebay will work, the one in the pic is a little newer, and the valve is used for fogging the motor. which can be done thru the carbs, for $125 saving s i have never fogged a motor. you in CA, will probably never have to either.
