Re: Bottom Painting..what Would You Do????

If you don't plan on keeping your boat in salt water, ie: moored in salt water, I would NOT paint the bottom. Once it's done you almost have to keep doing it, every year. You say it's on a trailer. If you intend to keep it trailered, only dunking it weekends or so, I wouldn't do it. Also... if it's on a lift, I wouldn't.

However, to answer your question, the price sounds about right for the first time - then do it your self after that.

For the extra $250.00 it's a no brainer - let them do it. I'd probably spill that much money in beer just getting it off the trailer. Go the easy way. ;)

Pbuzz, A lot of boatyards skip the sanding and priming when they bottompaint. The result is that the bottompaint falls off in large chunks.

Make sure your boatyard does what they say they will, as it is unusual.

BTW - on that job, the hardest part is getting the boat off the trailer. If you feel comfortable doing that, the rest is light sanding with an orbital sander, use epoxy barrier primer and ablative bottom paint. Some masking tape on the waterline and get rolling.

Sand the bottom, apply barrier coat and then 2 coats of bottom paint. One suggestion is have the barrier coat a different color then the bottom paint. If you see the barrier coat color come through it's time to paint again.

I too like the barrier coat first.. but one word of caution, I don't know how long the warranty on the bottom is, but some manufacturers will void the warranty if the hull is sanded prior to painting...

Here is a solution. Check your phone book or the internet and look up the nearest Line-X shop. They use a spray-on material for pick-up truck beds that can also be applied to boats. You will never have to paint again. Some Line-X shops also offer colors called Line-X X-tra.

Absolutely, if you can afford to pay them $550, which isn't that bad, I would do it, rather than lay it all on yourself. Relax and watch 'em work, haha.

His boat is a 2003, I don't think this warranty is still good.

I can get it off the trailer..I figured that one out..its the prep work im unsure of...202 wash? no sand finish...unsure which way..Then there the fiberglass surface prep by interluxx (YMA601) seems like alot of ways to go and not sure which to choose, actually more confused on which way to go. Once I get to the sanding part im ok...Its the prep before that.

Re: Bottom Painting..what Would You Do????

Often the warranty requires that a barrier coat be properly applied if the bottom is painted. This is the case with my 18' Stingray. FWIW, the price seems kind of low for a total prep, barrier coat, and bottom paint application. Keep in mind that it can take up to 5 coats of the barrier primer and then an additional 3 coats of the anti-fouling bottom paint to achieve the specifications required to prevent hull blistering and ensure a complete job.

Re: Bottom Painting..what Would You Do????

I just paid $525 for a sand and re-paint of my 18-footer and it's worth every penny. The boat had not been re-painted since the original paint job in 1999, so it was in pretty rough shape.

Mine is in the process of being barrier coated and bottom painted right now. It's an 18' foot. Cost is about $1200 to include 4-5 barrier coats and 3 coats of anti-foulding. Paint itself is over $200 per gallon. Definitely not a cheap endeavor, but necessary if you are going to slip the boat for the summer.

Re: Bottom Painting..what Would You Do????

Last year paid $ 7 a foot to have it done . Keep boat in brackish water 7 months a year on East coast . Next to nothing on bottom when pulled . Just painted , nothing else . Get 5.6 gph with 150 DI 4stroke '89 20 ft GW WA @ 3500 rpms and good water. I'm done with that DYI project . Marina has to know their paint . Stay safe .
PS If it was not on a trailer pre launch I would do it .

By what I was told...Removing from trailer, Cleaned, Sanded, Primed and ablative paint at 21.50 a foot...19.50 if already off the trailer...How I get it there off the trailer is anyones guess.
