Re: Bottom Painting..what Would You Do????

Last year paid $ 7 a foot to have it done . Keep boat in brackish water 7 months a year on East coast . Next to nothing on bottom when pulled . Just painted , nothing else . Get 5.6 gph with 150 DI 4stroke '89 20 ft GW WA @ 3500 rpms and good water. I'm done with that DYI project . Marina has to know their paint . Stay safe .
PS If it was not on a trailer pre launch I would do it .

ARE YOU REFERING TO A FRESH HULL THAT HAD NEVER BEEN PAINTED BEFORE?? i WOULD LOVE TO JUST SAND IT AND PAINT IT! ACTUALLY...HAS ANYONE EVER DONE THAT...SANDED AND THEN JUST PAINTED? MAYBE A INTERLUX 202 WIPE AFTER SANDING???

Pbuzz, I am not sure where this thread is. There are different kinds of primers. On a boat as new as yours, you will likely be fine with a "sandless"primer, versus a epoxy barrier coat primer. It will be one coat of primer, wait the time specified on the label, and then two coats of A-F paint. For the price you were quoted, I would be surprized if you get an epoxy primer, since it does take 3-4 coats minimum.

OK..Thats they way Im planning..But could you steer me to the pre non sanding direction? Still need the wax clean correct? If thats all Im fine..Also..Can I still put a mild scuff/sand on it or it wont help or matter? Thanks for all the suggestions,,I know now we are doing circles here..Are any of the primers better than any others?

The Pettit sandless primer is a good one. I have not tried the others. You need to make sure there is no wax on the hull. The primer instructions will recommend a no sand method. Likely wiping with a clean cloth and acetone or something.

If you do decide to sand, use fine grit paper, to minimize the gel coat you remove.
