i have typed this on other forums, so some stuff might not make sense.

I don?t know what forum this should be in hopefully this is the right one, but if not please move it to the right place. Or better yet is there a possibility of adding a forum for Boat Projects or Boat Restoration (DIY)????

AN (ArizonaNative) and I plan on restoring our boats this coming winter. There is nothing wrong with them but cosmetics (i.e. scratches, scuffs, paint chips, and some stuff is out dated). The plans are to repaint boat, trailer, redo the floor plans, new carpet, new trailer bunks, and trailer light wiring. We know these are big projects to do. AN has all the tools you could possibly think of to do it, and is very handy when it comes to stuff like this. (Hate to tell you AN but I have a feeling I will be the assistant throughout this whole thing. I guess you could say my signature is wrong now, because this JACK has no trade skill on this!!!!) He has a 19? Bullet Bass Boat (Fiberglass) and I have 14.5? SC Crestliner (Aluminum). Hopefully when it all said and done the boats will look brand new. AN knows a lot more then I do so he will chime in with more.

Here?s some question I have. Has anyone on here before tackled anything like this that might be able to lend a few pointer our way?

We both know to make this look good it will have to have an outstanding prep job prior to painting. What kind of paint would be a good paint to use on an aluminum boat, and a place to purchase at, also for fiberglass boat too?

I think the carpet will most likely come from Bass Boat Carpet. We have heard a lot of good things about this company. Does anyone else know of a reputable place?

What kind of wiring should a person use for trailer lights and a good place to purchase it at?

We also need to find a place to buy marine grade wood? I?m looking for ? inch (not for sure what AN is wanting use).

As all ways everyone wants the best so it is the best but also looking for good deals price wise. We plan on purchasing stuff here and there so we don?t break the bank come this winter. There will be more to follow but this what I can think of now. Also once we start we will defiantly have picture and step by step until it?s done so it will help the next guy if someone?s plans on starting a project like this down the road?.

Thank you for everyone?s help.

Nate and AN!

Re: Boat Projects

The most important part of the prep process that I can think of on the aluminum boat is etching primer. If the aluminum isnt etched before you paint it, it wont stick. Paint needs something to grip to, and it wont grip on a perfectly smooth surface...

Re: Boat Projects

Well I just got off the phone with Crestliner with a few question. The deck lift and extension is a go, also carpet on the side walls. As always he said more weight slower speeds hard on the motor reaching plan. Well 98 percent of the lakes I fish are what 5 MPH so I don?t think it will be a problem. Plus I have the boat almost paid off so I plan on placing the max horse power on it. Which is a 40 4 Stroke, although my stick in the boat say 50.

I asked him the initial weight of the factory carpet is 8-10OZ so what weight should I use? I was thinking of 20 but it just more unneeded weight or that?s what I?m thinking.

I also asked about paint and he said if I didn?t take it all the way down to the Aluminum I didn?t have to use self etching primer. So here a question should I take it all the way down or scuff the paint and repaint?

Thanks again.

Re: Boat Projects

Here is a new question. When I sand the paint off the boat and repaint it what about the Hull ID Number? Mine is stamp on the Transom port side in the Aluminum.

Thanks Again.

Re: Boat Projects

put a piece of tape over the hull #. can't answer glue problem, i don't use carpet. correct on the painting. if you are going to strip out the interior to the hull, strongly suggest you coat anything below water lever with Gluvit from the inside. stops leaks, alum boats best friend.

It?s not a plate. It was stamp in the aluminum. And painted over, but you can read it. I just scared after sanding and repainting it will be gone....

I really didn?t want to buy something and remount it if I didn?t have to. It?s not the money of buying one, but I like the way it is now?. You don?t know its there until a closer look?.
