I just noticed on my 2007 model travel trailer that i bought new 5 months ago
that 2 of the tires are dry rot cracking bad!

It has been parked on a concrete slab with the wheel covers on.No sun has been baking on these tires.Correct PSI in the tires.
This trailer has 900 miles on it.
I emailed the dealer and will see what they say.
I got a feeling they are not covered under warranty..

Do tire companies warranty dry rot?
I could be the factory used 2 tires on that side that had been laying around the factory for a long time...who knows.

This could be an interesting reply from the dealer..

These are the numbers i could locate.
They are Nanco brand
ST 205-75-14
DOT 5Y KCTI 2706
(made in China)...

On closer inspection the other tires are starting to do the same thing.Even the spare! All in the exact same area about two inches out from the rim going around the tire.

UV rays and ozone normally cause tire rot and usally after MANY years. They would not have set at the manufacturers that long.

With less than a year and 900 miles, these are defective tires that need to be replaced with ones that are not.

Good luck.

Thanks,Thats the way i feel about it also.I wonder what the dealers response will be.
I have had boat trailer tires 6 or 7 years old with no cracks and they set in the sun...

Hummm made in China.....there goes the warrenty unless you travel to China...when you get new ones and parking for a few months jack her up and put on stands ...keep the weight off the tires and buy American or Canadian made

I think Coachmen should warranty them. The whole unit has a one year factory and i have a 7 year extended warranty.
Looking over the paperwork it does not mention tires.

Re: Tire Dry Rot On New Tire

I used to work in a bicycle shop, and a customer brought in a bike with tires that were less than a year old, and which looked about the same as yours as far as cracking goes. We were getting set to warranty them, when I got to looking more closely and realized that while they had the same tread pattern, one was a Kenda (Taiwan) and the other was an IRC (Japan). We ended up refusing to warranty them, but we asked the customer where he stored the bike. Turns out he kept it in a shed with a lot of very volatile chemicals.

The scary thing is, he worked in there. If those fumes could rot a pair of tires in six months, imagine what they were doing to his lungs!

Could it be a storage issue? The cracking looks like typical stress you see from tires stored with weight on them while under-inflated.

hello,

i always insist on american made rubber whenever possible. however, i did finish a DRY ROT tire project this weekend. Made in CHINA.

old tires on my 2-wheel wbarrow got slime tubes due to leaks. i got the $120 wheelbarrow for 15 at garage sale, so it had been around. my dry rotted tubeless tires on small trailer at farm died due to leaks and mesquite thorns, etc. heck everything in country seems to have thorns... lol. so i had tubes i got for it. lil 400x480'sx8s.

but dint put them in as dint mount them. so thot heck i dont need slime tubes in city, i need them on farm. so derusted the trailer wheels, painted in white rustoleum... [shiny white and clean now; real spiffy] and then swapped the best dry rotted tires on wb for bad ones from trailer... and put slime tubes in trailer tires. lots of soapy water and i hand mounted them. :D

quite pleased with my new dry rotted tire job. ;) the good ones cracked a bit, the bad ones that and side deteriation. [gotta love contact cement, lol] tubes filled to spec: 30 psi. all that considered the insides conditon of tires was perfect. and so with tubes wb happy, trailer tires look like they are ready for a night of tap dancing with their 'new spats on'... and me, too. :)

now i can haul stuff to and from the boat here and there at the farm... :p and... i expect a long service life from both sets of tires n wheels.

what more could a guy ask for?

[no, no hiway speeds planned; lol!]

were ur tires sitting in the sun?

regards
lakester

No,not sitting in the sun at all.I have the white wheel covers over them.
It is stored on concrete pads with the leveling jacks taking up a lot of the weight.Even the spare tire is cracking and its covered also.
Bad batch of tires...

The date code is going to be a 4 digit number. the first 2 digits indicate the week of manufacture and the next 2 indicate the year. For example the date code 2607 will mean the 26th week of 2007. It is possible that you have an old set of tires which would explain what is happening.

Good point. Also, the side facing in should also be cracked. That's not usually a place that gets a lot of UV.

Talked to the Dealer. They are going to contact the manufacterer. The tires have their own warranty. The dealer even agreed they should not be cracking less than a year old.
I will see how this plays out...

5 news ones getting shipped out today! All it took was a call to Coachmen.
They are also upgrading me to a US made brand of radials instead of the bias ply.
All i have to do is get them mounted. We have a tire machine at work and a computerized balancer.
They said they will send them UPS ground out of their Illinois plant..:D

That was way too easy!
