Re: New to Boating, is my local dealer WAAAAY overpriced?

One more thing that struck me as strange. As I was leaving, I pointed to the one Bayliner that had the swivel captains seat. I said "That is the standard seat, correct?". He said "No, that's an upgrade, the standard seats are the back to back". I then said something to the effect of "Are you sure cause" he cut me off and said "Absolutely I'm certain, that seat is extra $$".

I then took the brochure he had just gave me and I said, "either you guys are getting ripped or we are, cause it shows right here in the brochure, standard seating is with the swivel seat". He just looked at it like "Derrr".

I walked out after that.

Run down to Mexico where they are making them now..your close enough.
Call Bayliner...out the factory door..how much?..on a pick up ready to go. Why mess with middle men, adding a couple grand easy. And any Bayliner dealer will do the warrenty work...they are REQUIRED! ..to honor...just keep a paper trail....

As far as Mexico, Reynosa is WAAY too far away. It's on the southern tip of Texas.

Glad to hear they are required to do the work. Problem is they can do it at there leisure. So, after I throw a fit to get the work done, it will sit there forever and they will probably do a crappy job just out of spite.

Anyone know if you can get the work done by a Boat repair place, but not a bayliner place?

Weekend Warrior toy haulers allowed me to do that. I had all my WW warranty work done here in town, but I didn't have to take to the actual in-town Weekend Warrior dealer. It kinda goes along the lines of what happens when you move to an area that doesn't have a local Bayliner shop.

Any Mercury or Volvo Penta (what ever your boat may have) could do the engine and drive warranty work. As for the boat you will most likely have to have a Bayliner dealer.

Why are you stuck on the Bayliner. In this economy you can get good deals on almost any brand. Shop around. You may pay a few more $$ but you will have service that should come with the sale.

If you think there trying to screw you WHY do think it will be anything BUT a nightmare if you went back for problem on a boat you bought somewhere else

Seriously consider "new" used. There are 4 of the 2007 entry level BL 175s in my area with under 20 hours and range from $9-11.5k. There has never been a better time to buy a good used boat due to our tanking economy. Whatever you get, NEVER return to that stealership!!!

it sounds to me that your local dealer, is feeling the pinch of the economy, and will not be around very much longer.

I'm not stuck on Bayliner. It just looked to be the least expensive Entry level New bowrider. That is until I went to my local dealer.

There are other factors in play here as well. I'm not only looking at the 175 Bayliner cause it was cheap. It is also small and light. I have a Jeep Cherokee 4.0 and the max I feel comfortable towing with it is 3000# maybe a little more. I can fit the 175 in my garage. If I get anything bigger I will have to get some sort of carport and put it on the side of my house (more $$).

I may be able to spend a bit more $$, but I would have to extend the payment period to keep my payments within my budget.

I am now looking at possibly some 191 Reinell's and if I financed for like 144mo I could get the payments under $200. I really like the design with the bench in the back and a walk through.

Actually I was trying to avoid them, but I don't want to drive 3hrs for warranty work. Every stealership in town, whether boats, cars or RV's try to rape you at the beginning. Some never let up, but other's come down to reality if you bring in a written quote. Come to think of it, out of the last six new vehicles I have bought, three of them I have had to travel down to the LA area to get.

- F-150 - Bought local a couple years ago when they were offering the dealer pricing with like 5k off MSRP
- Camry - Bought local after getting them to match a written quote
- Aljo 5th wheel - Bought local, but I really didn't shop around (could have saved thousands)
- Honda quad - Bought down south, saved like $2000 (it was like 33% less than the local prices)
- Weekend Warrior 5th wheel - Went back to the same place I bought my Aljo from, they were pricks, wouldn't budge on price then tried to make me feel guilty for spending out of town. No guilt I bought from LA area and saved $4000.
- Kawasaki Jet Ski - Local dealer wouldn't budge, ended up saving $2300 down south and getting a couple vests thrown in.

So basically the car/truck dealers are reasonable once you beat them up a bit, but all the toy folks are overpriced and stubborn.

I think i would be driving to buy then.
My travel Trailer was the same way,all the local dealers would not budge on the MSRP. I found a dealer 900 miles away that took my offer that was 6K under what the locals were asking.Road trip...went and picked it up.Even after gas and hotels i saved 5K on it..I was happy.I have even had it in to the local dealer for warranty work with no questions asked.I talked to one of the sales guys here and told him what i paid and he about hit the floor. He said no way could they have matched that price. If i ever trade it in the Dealer i bought it from may get it back. They were great people to deal with. They even thru in a Reese weight distribution set up in the price and installed it free..800.00 hitch:)

I'm the local Glastron evangelist, so I though I'd mention the Glastron MX 175...another entry level boat of about the same size as the Bayliner 175. It's starts out a couple thousand more than the Bayliner, but as the other guys have said you might find a "new 2007" or get some decent discounts at a boat show.

The Glastron web site says Valley Cycle and Marine as a local dealer for you...

Maybe they used to carry them. They are not listed on the Valleyboat website and I called yesterday and asked wht there entry level boat was. They said Reinell.

I'll take a look at them though.

Most likely this is what I will do. I just like to try to buy local. Even if there prices are waaay out there, if I get them to match an out of town quote, i'll buy locally. I doubt they will come down that much though.

I think we're looking at different Valley Marines. The one from the Glastron site links to is apparently now called or also called Royer Cycle and Marine....at least that's where their web page is...

Should be another place to look at least...

Got it, that's our Yamaha dealer. Didn't know they also sold boats.

I did look at the Glastron 175 MX but it looks more cramped than the bayliners and costs like $3k more to start.

You cant go wrong with the Bayliner. It doesnt have all the spit and polish some of the other boats have but you cant beat the price and sounds like it is what you want. Don't let the poor dealership experience turn you off. There are many slightly used 175's floating around and you can get them for a good price, just research you will be surprised. Now there is a difference between warranty work and service. I would hope you wont need warranty work and if you do, a quality dealership is what you want even if you have to drive since warranty work should be few and far between, a little drive would be worth it a low stress dealer. As for service, if you don't want to do it yourself, any marina or dealer can service your boat since it will have Merc power which most boats have. Your Merc warranty and your boat warranty are different. If you follow the merc recommended service and maintain your records you should have no issues if something happens with your motor and out-drive.

Yeah, I will keep a look out for a new-used one but around here anything 2006-2007 they pretty much want the same price I can get a new one for. Plus I will get a better rate and warranty on new.

There is one about 1 1/2 hrs away, new 07 with the flight package (includes tower) for $13,500 + tax + fees.

Or I can look for a new 07 or 08 without any upgrades and add them myself. I like the look of the Monster Towers.

Check with any Sea Ray or Maxum dealers in the area. They along with Bayliner are owned by Brunswick. I bet if you bought that 175 from the out of town dealer, you could take it to the local SR or Maxum dealer for warranty work. They all use Mercruiser engines and drives and Brunswick also owns Mercruiser.
I wouldn't give that oringinal dealer a dime. Let him go out of business.

Buy out of area for your Bayliner. I know here in Iredell County, NC where I live there are A LOT of boat dealers, all of them are discounting the boats under MSRP. There was one dealership Wher-Rena that was offering Bayliners at Invoice, and leftover 07s at way under Invoice just to move em. I would say, pull up a list of all dealers with in 300 or so miles and start making some phone calls. See what you can drag up. Good luck!

Any idea how much below msrp the 07's were?

I just e-mailed like 10 different Bayliner dealerships. We will see if any of them give me good prices.
