Re: New to Boating, is my local dealer WAAAAY overpriced?

Any idea how much below msrp the 07's were?

I just e-mailed like 10 different Bayliner dealerships. We will see if any of them give me good prices.

I don't know if this is the same price they had before or not, I don't think it is, cause I remember seeing another one cheaper, but they definitely don't have the 07 inventory that they did before. Currently they have an 07 Bayliner 175 with Family Fun Package and Helm Bucket Seat Exchange for $12,995. Checking on Bayliner, this is the base cost of the boat + Family Fun Package +$200, but it doesn't include the Bayliner destination charge of $1,179 or any dealer prep fees. So it isn't a bad deal. I know they had a bigger sale going on about a month ago. Wher-Rena 2007 175

Re: New to Boating, is my local dealer WAAAAY overpriced?

Thanks for that link Ares596ZP. About $1000 below MSRP looks to be what the 07's are going for (except for my local dealer).

One snag I am looking at though. My tow vehicle is a 4x4 2000 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 I6. It's rated towing capacity is 5000#. I figured somewhere around 3500# would be my max. But, it also say's I need trailer brakes. The 175's don't come with trailer brakes.

Can brakes be added, and if so, is it a huge expense?

If it's too much hassle, I wonder if I should step up to a bigger boat that is a bit heavier (I'm looking at 2300# for the 175 and right around 3000# for the 185) but has trailer brakes?

My budget is $200 a month payment max. But I have been finding that you can finance these forever, so I guess I could get a bit bigger more expensive boat and stay under my limit. The less I spend the better obviously but I really don't want to have to move to a different tow vehicle right now. I love my Cherokee, I use the hell out of it during hunting season. :)

Hey Hotwls13, I tow my 185 with a 4x4 Jeep Liberty with the 3.7 liter. It also is rated at 5000lbs. My trailer also did not come equipped with brakes. I have no towing issues at all. Pulls it just fine and the 4x4 at can elimanate a lot of problems with slicknessat the ramp. Main thing I do is NEVER go above 50, NEVER get on the interstates and I take my time getting to where I am going. Make sure you brake early and downshift.

How much does your 185 weigh when loaded? Not sure if I can avoid the interstate on 20% of my trips though. I'm hoping my Cherokee will hold me over til July of next year. Then I plan to purchase a larger 1500 truck.

Seriously consider "new" used. There are 4 of the 2007 entry level BL 175s in my area with under 20 hours and range from $9-11.5k. There has never been a better time to buy a good used boat due to our tanking economy. Whatever you get, NEVER return to that stealership!!!

Bingo.
I understand you need to finance and you want "new" as you're a new boater.
Buy a 4.3L powered Stingray that's 1-2 years old. Finance through your local credit union.

Make sure you brake early and downshift.

Make sure you tell everyone that is going to cut you off in traffic, turn without a signal, etc. that you will need advance warning because you have a heavy boat/trailer behind you.............. I'm sure they will comply

The Jeep cherokees have a few problems when towing. First of all (like my Grand Cherokee) the brakes are barely enough to stop the vehicle. Second, the cooling system leaves a lot to be desired. You will need a larger external tranny cooler no matter what you are towing. With out trailer brakes you should be looking into "Big Brake Kit" upgrades for the Cherokee. For my GC these start at $2500. I upgraded my front rotors and pads as well as my rear pads (total cost about $350). But I have trailer brakes also. I have no problems stopping with a 4500lb load on my GC.

Main Point - GET TRAILER BRAKES!!!

I think I saw someone post that the brake kit for these trailers is somewhere around $500-600. If I end up with a boat without trailer brakes, I will either add them or get a bigger vehicle. It just sucks that these don't already come with brakes.

My 185 with a full tank of gas and the trailer come in at just under 3000lbs. Definitly make sure your Jeep has a tranny cooler.(If it is trail rated it should aleady be equipped). If you can't tell ask the Jeep parts dept. if yours has one. They only need the VIN #.

Yea, I'd like to put brakes on my trailer, (1 thing at a time) but I have no problems with stopping and that 175 your thinking about weighs a good 400-500 pounds less.

My Jeep definitely has a tranny cooler (I visually checked a couple days ago).

What do you guys think about $15K OTD for a New 2007 175 with the Flight package? That gives me the wakeboard tower, bimini, Stereo, graphics (which I could do without) and a flashy steering wheel. They are offering the 2007 Base model for $1k less. I figure the Bimini and Tower are worth $1k.

That sounds pretty good. You wont find all those extras for 1K. The radio is not all that but the tower is nice and the Bimini is nice. My Bimini is Sunbrella so it is not a cheapo.

Just curious, what's the quality of the factory Bimini?

Also, I just looked at the stereo specs: - AM/FM Stereo / Controller: Waterproof 120-watt Satellite-Ready w/Inputs for iPod, mp3 & CD Player

Haha, I thought it was a CD player, I guess it just has an input. No worries though as Sirius radio and mp3 works for me. It say's Sirius ready, does that mean they already installed an antenna? If so, that would be sweet, just transfer my unit over when boating.

You are lucky to have one soo close. Aren't those the coolest stores ever? As for checking out there boats, I think I will pass. Thanks for the offer though. They are more expensive than the bayliners, so I'm not considering them.

I have pretty much decided on a bayliner (due to small size and cost). I will most likely be purchasing a new one within a month (my wife is making me wait). Unless, I find some smoking deal on a used one that I can't pass up. :)

The Bimini Material is Sunbrella, very good quality but the frame for mine says it is for a 185 and is a tad big. Fits well and does the job but I noticed that it doesn't line up perfect with my connectors, maybe they gave me the wrong one. The radio does not have a receiver or antenna, the ready means you can add those for a fee plus subscription. The MP3 input works but with only two speakers you can only hear it when you are sitting. If you purchase this boat please jump over to the Bayliners Owners Club (BOC) there are many 175 owners over there (including me) that have done many upgrades and awesome things to the 175, have your checkbook ready :)

Well, I guess if nothing else, I am getting the stereo mounts etc. I will probably upgrade the stereo at a later date, but for now, mp3 and my portable Sirius receiver should work. I will just have to install a 12v outlet in that cubby for the sirius and I already have an extra antenna. :)

As for BOC, I am already a member (joined a couple days ago) and they have tons of info. I am on like page 45 of the HUGE small bowrider thread. Is it just me or does that site go down alot?

As for the New 07 Flight deal I'm working right now. Do you guys think I will be able to get him to go $14k OTD? That's 1K less than his current price. Or, I may try to get like $1k worth of add-ons instead. I think that would be easier for a dealer to do since they are giving me the add-ons at retail price so they are saving $$ there.

Re: New to Boating, is my local dealer WAAAAY overpriced?

One more question, if I do get them to add some stuff, what should I ask for? What I mean is, are there things that are already included with a new boat? Such as anchor, etc?

Is there a list of must haves before you get on the water? I searched but couldn't find anything.

I know there are going to be unexpected expenses, but the more I can get into this initial financed deal the better.

Things that come to mind are:

Anchor
Bumpers
Flare
Oars
Life Vests
Whistles (we needed these for the tubers skiers when using watercraft)
Tube
Wakeboard
Wakeboard rope
Tube rope (can this also be used as a tow rope?)
Tube pump

Those are just the loaded stuff, now for the installed stuff:

Brake kit (my particular situation)
Depth Guage
Fish Finder
12v Plug
Rear Trim switch
3 step ladder
Smart Tabs
Tower Wakeboard mounts

Just trying to think of all the extra expenses and get as many as possible in the boat purchase. Would be good to have a must have list and then a add later want list.

Is that OTD price including tax or before tax? If before tax, then the 15K he's at right now is not much less than '08 retail price is it? I would hope he would at least come down to to 14. If that includes taxes and everything...well, I would still hope he would come down to 14, but they might not have that much room to deal on the 175...

Just for comparison, the '07 Glastron MX 175 w/XL package I was looking at was 13,900 + tax OTD. So it was about $3000 under '08 retail. I ended up getting a GT 185 for about $5000 under '08 retail. Obviously, I'm in a different part of the country and thus different market than you, plus different boats have differing amounts of room to deal...but I know when I was looking I was always interested in what other folks where paying...

When I bought mine I had them include all the required coast guard equipment and anchor, chain and rope. I would try and push as far as you can go. The boat industry is having issues right now and I know dealers want to get stuff moved. You may want to consider a full cover and even the snap on covers which come in handy when you dont feel like putting the full cover on.

Some stuff you might get easy like the wakeboard tower accessories, depth finder maybe even the brake kit but I think the smart tabs, ladder rear switch may not be so easy basically because not all dealers will carry that stuff and will not want to order it to give you for free but it doesnt hurt to try. When I bought mine I made a deal for the snap on covers and my depth finder. When the dealer came with the paper work the price he quoted me did not include the extras and the final price was $900 more. I walked away and was leaving when he just gave me the stuff, he wanted to sell.

Thanks for the #'s though.
