Hello boaters, I don't know much about this yet, but I will! In case you haven't heard, the federal govt wants small boats to pay the same price as commercial ships have to for environmental standards. I only heard about this this morning as one of our state senators Chuck Schumer, NYS, is trying to block this bill. Apparently, commercial shipping has to pay $800 bucks a year for a permit due to environmental standards, clearly, according to Schumer this does not include pleasure crafts, small boats etc. However, Schumer states that the feds are trying to push this thru that All Boats have to pay this permit fee every year!! Does anuone know more about this?

TD, you know better than that! Like Jason in Friday the Thirteenth or Freddy Cruger or a number of horror charactors, government fees raise thier ugly heads every year. You have to keep whacking them off, killing them for yet one more season. Next year they will be back.

The more horrid the fee the greater mileage the politicols will get out of it and the more money they will get in their campaign funds.

Repeat, "it's only a movie" and remember to call that local politicol and whine with a serious tone.:D

Well

It was ment for tanker balast water and and the issue was forced buy a court ruleing to all boats

As of now the repeal has passed through both houses with the clock ticking that they will get it through before they have summer vaction

"A lot of good things have happened in the last 2 weeks.

* First, on May 15, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee approved H.R. 5949 "The Clean Boating Act of 2008." This bill, introduced by Rep. LaTourette (R-OH) only fifteen days prior, has the same language as S. 2766, "The Clean Boating Act of 2008," introduced in March by Senators Boxer (D-CA) and Nelson (D-FL). The House bill was voted out of the Committee without amendment and is headed to a full House Vote.
* Second, on May 21, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee voted on S. 2766 "The Clean Boating Act of 2008," and passed it out of Committee without amendment. This bill is now headed to a full Senate vote.
* These are both FANTASTIC developments, and it means we've jumped two big hurdles in the last two weeks- hurdles we could not have jumped without your loud grassroots voices!

Where does that leave us?

We still have a long way to go, and we still need your help- all we can muster- to pass this legislation for recreational boating.

* Time is running out- the permit deadline is in about four months. Congress has a week recess for Memorial Day and July 4, and four weeks in August.
* We need to get S. 2766/H.R. 5949 to a full Senate and full House vote during June or July.
* We need more cosponsors on the bills, and we need to secure more YES votes on behalf of recreational boating from both Senators and Representatives."

One good thing about it is it would certainly cut down the number of junkers people drag out to the lake.
I just love waiting in line at a ramp while someone tries to start their rotted out trihull with lawn chair seating and an engine that hasn't been run in 5 years.

It will be killed and this will not apply to recreational boaters.

Oddly enough, over run with them.
I'd gladly pay 8 bills a year to be rid of them.

Really? My entire rig is not worth $800. And yet, it starts every time I pull the recoil rope. Such a thing would end my boating altogether. Does that sound OK to you, Mr. I've got mine, so the heck with you?

But like wow, GE 2 man, you changed your post . . . It originally said something like "this is dead". Anyway, I still think it is prudent to call your Senators and Congressman. Not done, needs to clear both Houses and get signed by the President.

Yeah, maybe we could make out on the 100,000 used Piles 'O Crap that will be a dime a dozen if it passes . . . I wouldn't expect that it would have a negative affect on used values either

You cant just judge them by seeing it.. as soon as i get foam in im takin mine out.. ill throw some bag chairs in and take it out for all i care.. a boat is a boat no matter what shape its in and people use them to relax.. dont judge them for what kind of boat they use....

I don't think it'll go thru.. like said before these are recreational boats.. we dont get paid for using them.. why should we have to pay the fee..

Re: $800.00 permit. All Boats!! Every Year!!!

A Simon and Garfunkle tune had the line "a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest". I have been guilty of this. I read that Bomar is upset by the time he wastes waiting on rigs that are not ready to go at the ramp, not neccessarily just old ones that look bad.

He may correct me on this.

New boat owners also suck up ramp time, but I have to admit that ones that have been neglected for years seem to be more prevelant when it comes to people using the ramp as a test bed.

Yeah, my Gypsie looks bad, but runs good. A well maintained 39 year old Evinrude is on the back of it. Count me in both camps if there is a divide, but I don't think any insult was intended.

Re: $800.00 permit. All Boats!! Every Year!!!

Well, the thing is that bomar76 doesn't mind if the government charges me $800/year to run my boat that's not even worth that much. I'm on a fixed income now. $800/year is not possible.

My boat's ugly, but it runs perfectly. I don't mind if bomar76 wants to pay $800 for his boat, but I do mind if he thinks it's ok to require a 12 aluminum fishing boat to pay that fee.

I'll challenge him to a race over who gets away from the launch faster, launching solo. I think we know who'll win.

Thinking is good.
