During the evening on Memorial Day, a friend of mine was rushed to the hospital. He began spitting up blood and looked deathly ill. My wife was working the ER that day and told me that they had him life flighted out to University Hospital in Columbus. His kidneys shut down and was in very serious trouble.

Up until this last Wednesday, his fight for life was over. (damn this is hard to put into words).

He was well liked by everyone. 38 years old is just too young to die. He came from a wealthy family, unmarried, never worked, and never missed a weekend at the docks. He was a very heavy drinker and this is what is suspected that caused his kidneys to fail. After seeing my wifes brother die from the same thing several years ago, my wife and I pretty much figured that he was on the same track. Just ashame to be taken like that.

Friday evening is when I got the news that he had passed. The whole dock was grieving like I've never experienced. Its really sad things happen like this.

When my BIL passed away in 2000 at 45, that is when I pretty much gave up on daily alcohol consumption. Anymore it doesn't matter if I do drink or not. It has got to the point that I would just rather drink iced tea instead. Guess I'm getting old and growing out of it.

Todd was his name for those who would be kind enough to say a prayer for his family..........Thanks very much.............SS

Sorry to hear about that SS....tough stuff indeed.
Booze is a 'taker' for sure and its actually nice to see people turn the corner a bit when they age and dial down to moderation and light consumption only rather than excess. Not everyone can tho' at least without some external help and support, and they don't always get it in a timely way.
Thoughtful Regards,
BP

SS, condolences for the loss. Believe me when I say I know more about how this unfolded than you can imagine. I lost my Mom in the same fashion 3 months ago even though I don't think she ever drunk a drop. I won't get into the details of the condition unless you want to know, but if the disease was similar, the blood means the critical damage had been done long before.

Re: Tuff Weekend at the Dock

Never was a party animal. While my contemporaries were partying it up and getting in trouble I was out fishing. Got terribly sick with my first experiment with drinking too much and haven't been drunk since... About 55 years, now.

I drink.. .probably less than the recommended "moderation"; one or two a day.

All, yes, all of the guys I ran around with in High School (when I wasn't fishing) are dead. Mostly died drunk in car crashes, and young. Pedro died in Nam and Mooch in Korea. :(

Losing a friend too early can be a wake-up call. Young men and women are being killed by drugs at an alarming rate. It alarms me, anyway. My 38 year old neighbor died of a heart attack brought on by cocaine addiction.

Sorry you lost a friend, SS. :(

Re: Tuff Weekend at the Dock

SS,

Please accept my prayers and condolences and pass them along to his family. While they suspect that booze was the cause, I suspect that it was only part of the problem. The booze contributes to high blood pressure which, when left uncontrolled, will kill your kidneys...I speak from personal experience as I am waiting for a kidney transplant, myself. To all who read this thread, if you know your blood pressure is high, please take the medication and any other actions recommended by your doctor. For those who don't know, please, please have it read and act accordingly. God bless.
