Check out this, nest?, of rattlesnakes. It's a mixture of Western Diamond-Backed and Mohave rattlers. Very odd to see the two apparently living in harmony, or whatever you want to call it. The greenish ones are the Mohaves and are, by far, the most dangerous snake in North America.

WOW, wouldn't want to stumble across that while hiking  I've heard the Mohave's will actually chase you, though I never wanted to test the theory...

Been a desert rat for 30 years and only bumped into a rattler 1 time, guess I should consider myself lucky.

What parts (AZ I assume?) did those come from?

Near Tucson. I've been in the desert all my life too and I have never seen more than one at a time. They're territorial which is why this is so odd. They pose no real threat though, you can hear them from 50 yards away.

Napalm (I love the smell of napalm in the morning... smells like victory! :D ) would create cooked rattler and make the good eats.

Can somone say Par-Tay? Who ate the last of the rats?

It looks like a spring warmup in front of the den. Around here the diamond backs will occasionally share with the copperheads.

Have only seen one poisonous snake around here... and that was a copperhead. We're supposed to have some type of rattler here, but I've never even met anyone that's come across one. But the big black rat snakes will scare the pants off ya.

The only good snake is a dead snake. Kill them all.

That is strange seeing them grouped together, poisonous snakes of the SW are in an 'arms race,' they constantly mutate the chemistry of their venom in order to dominate in the wild, anti-venom has to be re-engineered to account for this

It would be great to just start throwing m80's in there. And maybe a jerry can full of gas.

Snakes  But I love the smell of 2cycle in the morning! :D

When I was a teenager, I went to visit my younger cousin in upstate NY, he had a "snake house", an ordinary backyard shed he kept his captured snakes in, he took me in there to show them off, and I was  but, no poisonous ones, and he knew well, each type, and which ones to avoid, so I didn't mind getting up close, & handling them :) He also had a pet crow that used to land on his arm, or the deck, that he would feed on occasion, until he went away on vacation, and somebody shot it :(

But if I was to venture in that area, a sawed off 12gauge would be my best friend ;)

I lived in Tucson (well, Vail, which is where Tucson ends in the east) for 5 years, the whole time I only ever saw one rattler, that at a zoological park called the Desert Museum. Of course, this critter was not in the displays, he was out and about on the walking paths!

Never saw a scorpion out there in that whole time either. Tarantulas, Bobcats, coyotes, javalina, a mountain lion once, and a Gila Monster twice. I guess I just smelled funny to the poisonous creatures of the desert!

I guess I am. I'd rather deal with a mouse than a rattler. Who wouldn't?... ;)

Depends if that mouse is carrying the Hantavirus. As far as I'm concerned, the more snakes, the less rodents, and the less rodents, the better.
