My old 33 seahorse isn't getting gas from the tank. when I squeeze the bulb it just squirts out the sides at the fuel connection on the motor. What would be my first step here? Forgive the ignorance.

Re: not getting gas

Welcome to iboats!

You can replace the fuel line connector or replace the o-rings in the existing connector to stop the leak. That leak can not only allow fuel to leak from the fitting but also to allow air to enter the fuel line, killing the suction of fresh to fuel to the carb.

Either the carb float is stuck closed or the carb bowl is already full. If the motor will run for a few seconds after spraying a bit of fuel mix into the carb throat, you have a carb restriction. Clean and rebuild carb with a kit.

thanks for your help. The hose is very new, but I did notice it leaking a bit around the clamps. it does seem to squirt the gas through fine, but has trouble getting into the motor, except when I apply pressure at the connection on the motor.

as long as I gave the bulb a squeeze every so often it would keep running last night. It did set for a couple of seasons before this. Carb was rebuilt back then too.

Re: not getting gas

Ah, I see. Two things then, first if the connector has a air leak, the fuel pump will suck air and stop the supply of fuel to the pump, hence no fuel to the carb. Second, fix the air leak at the fuel line connector. If the carb is still not getting fuel, it's the fuel pump itself.

An easy fuel pump test is to remove the fuel line at the carb inlet. Place this hose in a can and pull the starter rope. Fuel should squirt into the can if the pump is working OK. As a side note, pumping the primer bulb bypasses the fuel pump and delivers fuel directly to the carb. Be sure your tank vent is open too.

i say you have a stuck or clogged needle valve. along with bad O rings in the connector. if you are using an aftermarket fuel line from tank to motor, they are noted for leaking on the older motor connections, as the O ring is the wrong size. you need a OEM connecter on the hose.

Re: not getting gas

"Bypassing the fuel pump" is a misnomer of sorts. All the fuel goes through the pump, either manually with the primer bulb or by the pump normally working via the cylinder pulses. I guess I could have rephrased that to say "Bypassing the normal fuel pump operation" Thanks for putting a finer point on the matter to avoid any confusion.:)

That new fuel hose could be a Yamaha hose. Looks alike but is different and will leak at the connector.
