This could be promising if it pans out.

Scientists Find Microbes That Eat Garbage, Excrete Crude Oil

Tuesday , June 17, 2008
service_times_36.gif

"Ten years ago I could never have imagined I'd be doing this," says Greg Pal, 33, a former software executive, as he squints into the late afternoon Californian sun. "I mean, this is essentially agriculture, right? But the people I talk to ? especially the ones coming out of business school ? this is the one hot area everyone wants to get into."
He means bugs. To be more precise: the genetic alteration of bugs ? very, very small bacteria ? so that when they feed on agricultural waste such as wood chips or wheat straw, they do something extraordinary. They excrete crude oil.
Unbelievably, this is not science fiction. Pal holds up a small beaker of bug excretion that could, theoretically, be poured into the tank of the giant Lexus SUV next to us.
Not that Pal is willing to risk it just yet. He gives it a month before the first vehicle is filled up on what he calls "renewable petroleum." After that, he grins, "it's a brave new world."
Pal is a senior director of LS9, one of several companies in or near Silicon Valley that have spurned traditional high-tech activities such as software and networking and embarked instead on an extraordinary race to make $140-a-barrel oil from Saudi Arabia obsolete.
"All of us here ? everyone in this company and in this industry ? are aware of the urgency," Pal says.

"Elect me president and I promise a pot oil pooping microbes in every house!":D

Hogwash. Not even theoretically could crude power a gas burning engine.

I've seen on one of the Discovery channels where large livestock farms use the poop to produce methane to run the powerplants to their farms.

Bugs bug the crap out of me, but I don't think a Lexus would run off of it :D

There's some folks (on the fringe of crazy?) that believe oil is renewable and not from dinosaurs. I came across this when googling for info on "ultra deep wells".

It's called abiogenic petroleum therory. It seems that there is some evidence to support it, but also some that doesn't. If it is true, it would effectively blow the whole idea of "Peak Oil" right out of the water.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abiogenic_petroleum_origin

wiki said:
The theory of abiogenic petroleum origin holds that natural petroleum was formed from deep carbon deposits, perhaps dating to the formation of the Earth. The ubiquity of hydrocarbons in the solar system is taken as evidence that there may be a great deal more petroleum on Earth than commonly thought, and that petroleum may originate from carbon-bearing fluids which migrate upward from the mantle.

Why don't they genetically engineer a labradore that could poop crude? Those things could pump out a couple barrels a day!:D

-reminds me of Nibbler from Futurama

You calling me "CRAZY"?????????????????

I mean, think about it, there never were that many dinasaurs on earth to make as much oil as there is in the world!

What about the Labraya (SP) Tarpits Seems that there was oil on earth while the dinasaurs were here????????

Nah, it sounds scientifically possible to me, but if it's true then it also supports conspiracy theories in regards to oil shortages. People get called crazy for believing in those.

If it is renewable, then oil companies know this and they know there's no shortage. If it's true, it's in the oil companies best interest that we continue to believe that supply is limited.

See, now we're tiptoeing on tinfoil hat territory.

Actually there is quite a bit of info on the subject..UMM if i remeber the world was once flat and to say otherwise was bad business... But hased on the volume of liquid we have pulled out the ground .....that's one big number.. of dead dino's

But there is a known oilfeild that dried up and years later filled right back up..with oil of different character... I will find it

Re: Hey! Another Oil thread!

I think that new theory about oil is true, at least to a point. My father works in the oil industry and there is a single well off the Louisiana coast that had not been making good at all. They were about to shut it in. Suddenly it's making more than it ever did before for no explanation whatsoever and it's volume hasn't even decreased since. There is certainly real evidence supporting the oil coming from the mantle of the earth. It obviously didn't come from dead dinosaurs. As this article states, "Also interesting is the fact that oil is found in huge quantities among geographic formations where assays of prehistoric life are not sufficient to produce the existing reservoirs of oil. Where then did it come from?"

Here's the link. Before I even told my father what the link was about, he named the platform and spit out the numbers. This is the real deal.

I mean, c'mon, we use how many million barrels a day and have done this for how many decades? There weren't that many dead dinos around, sorry. This stuff is coming from somewhere and it ain't T-rex.
