New points, alternator, plugs and wires, coil and fuel/water separator filter to cure a no starting problem this season. Started right up after that. I adjusted the points (.022) but did not use a dwell meter or check timing. In driveway, ran like a champ and reved hard (although idle seemed a bit high to keep it from stalling - 850 rpm). Anyway, took it out on the water today and could not push very hard under power. WOT only got me maybe 3300 rpm and it was bogging long before that. Limped around for a while and played with the idle mixture need to no avail. Carb was rebuilt last year and ran OK.

Water? Timing?

Why is it that the engine can run like Vasily Alekseyev at home and Clay Aiken when on the water?

Also - there's a clinking-clanging sound coming from the back of the engine (so it seems).

You can't change the dwell without re-setting the timing. The old dats of using a matchbook to set the points dont work anymore.
You need to do a COMPLETE tune-up.
Get a dwell meter and set them at 29-31 then set the timing I believe it's 08btdc.
It runs great at home cause you aint go no load!!! Jerry

Re: engine bogging - 2.5L 1985

Got me dwell meter in hand and new digital timing light. I'm on it tonight.

One question about the water issue: how can I tell and how can I get rid of it?

So far I think:
- Pull (new) fuel / separator filter and pour it into a clear glass. Water will show on bottom. (can I re-use?)
-Pull carb and look to see if water is on the bottom. If so, just dump it out and blow it dry?
-Pump out tank from bottom up (I have good access to it) until i get all the water out.

How much water might I expect to see in the tank from an off season? It was pretty full.

Will this resolve it? Any residual water in cylinders gets converts to steam and/or gets blown out exhaust valves, right?

Note that the next run out on the water will be made with an portable 3 gallon outboard tank as to eliminate the water in the tank issue.

Re: engine bogging - 2.5L 1985

OK, timing and dwell all set. Pulled my fuel filter/separator and there is absolutely no sign of water. Nonetheless, I'm going to run the engine from an outboard tank just to be able to eliminate bad fuel as a possibility.

Two questions:

-Is it at all possible that I could have significant water in my carb but the fuel filter be 'dry'?

-Is there any way to simulate running under load with your boat on your trailer? (Probably not but I thought I'd just ask anyway...)

Throw a can of seafoam in the tank. It dries as well as a lot of other things.
