Getting power to the starter of 30HP Johnson

I purchased a new solenoid. I'm going to put in on this weekend. The boat is 250 miles away. When I would turn the key over there would be a series of clicking noises from the solenoid. I replaced the battery also. I was able to jump the starter from the old battery and the engine started. If the new solenoid doesn't fix the problem I'm going to cut all the connectors of the wires and check the cable for internal corrosion. If this doesn't fix the problem does anybody else have ideas. Thanks.

Clicking noises is almost always a dead battery or low voltage to the solenoid/starter so check the wires... Make sure they're all good and clean and shiny. But I've seen in the auto world where the wires can be internally corroded and need to be replaced.

I really doubt that you need a new solenoid.

Go to Engine FAQs and do "Outboard won't start". Let us know what you find.

Re: Getting power to the starter of 30HP Johnson

I thought I brought it home with me to get tested. I lost it from somewhere between Lewes DE and Central PA. So, I needed the new one anyway. I did purchase a new battery and fully charged it. Another person on the forum thinks it may be dirty wires. That will be the next thing I check after I put the new solenoid on. I will check out the FAQ's. Thanks for the help.

I lost the original solenoid somewhere between Lewes DE and Central PA.
So I had to get a new one. After talking with the Johnson Dealer, he said if that doesnt fix it to replace the cables also. I did buy a new battery and fully charged it. Still didn't fix it. I used the old battery to jump the starter and it fired up just fine. Thanks for the help. I'll let you know what I find out.

Thanks, Matt

Hi Steve,

Got the problem fixed finally. The battery cable had a splice in the middle.
Cut the bad out and hooked the ends up to jumper cables and it started.

Thanks, Matt

Hi JB,

You were right. It wasn't the solenoid. There was a splice in the middle of the battery cable that was corroded. Cut it out and hooked the ends to jumper cables and is started. Thanks for the help.
