Talked to a local marina owner today. I can rent a slip for the rest of the season for $300. It's a nice small private marina. I'm going to take a looked possibly tomorrow night. From what I've heard about it, everyone is real nice and keeps a close eye on all the boats. Is there anything I need to buy use a slip? What do i need to look for when checking the marina out?

Ron

ps. This is the same marina the previous owner rented a slip up until about 3 years ago. (I bought the boat last year)

I'd check for security cameras, and a fence around the place. Also an automatic gate to control access is a good thing. Take a look at the boats, is there fishing gear on board and in sight? electronics in plain sight? If so this is a good thing as the owners feel safe there. I always lock everything up or take it with me, but I'm amazed at my marina how many people leave their fishing rods in external holders. If its in an area that requires it, is there 24hr security? Probably not, but you can wish.

Around here, (WV) on the Ohio River, the season ends around October or so.

you will need a good bit of dock line. bilge pump, good battery for bilge pump. if it has electricity, get an onboard charger, to maintain battery.

I know the marina doesn't have cameras but it is fenced all the way around. The previous owner and some of the people I have talked to said there has never been any vandalism or problems at the marina. I have an automatic float switch for the bilge pump, I'll just need to make sure the battery is up to par. Since it's on the river, what if we have some good rain and the river comes up a couple feet??

I'll guess that the docks float Ron. Seems to be the way most docks on rivers work, since the water level can change so much.
Does your boat have bottom paint? If not, you'll need a way to take it out occasionally to acid wash the growth off the bottom.

tides, is why is said you need a lot of dock line. you need to get someone to help you with spring lines, this way you leave enough slack in your lines to account for the tides, and the boat still not hit the dock. you may need to add a couple of extra cleats.

Well, the very most basic question is whether the marina operator requires a minimum level of third party liability insurance on the boats moored there. If some twink decides to refuel in his slip and sets fire to everything, you will for sure want to know that he has indeminity coverage for his mistake. Ditto for your own boat - if a storm blows up and your docking line unexpectedly parts and your boat smashes up the brand-new 34' Sea Ray nexts to you, you and your neighbor will be happy if you've got coverage. So check that out first. If there is no insurance requirement, my advice: move on.

Nope no bottom paint. I'm thinking the longest it will be at the slip only 2 weeks at a time. I'd rather pull it out every couple weeks, clean it up then back to the slip the next time we head out. (Guess I'm too particular about how the boat looks :D )

Re: Questions about renting a slip

Went and looked at the marina tonight. Full 6 ft high fence all around with locked gate. Bathrooms, showers, charcoal grills, ice machine, locked gate to get on the dock and fuel at $4.40 a gallon. You can even camp if you want. Seems like someone is there all the time. They are looking to see if that have a full slip (with walkways on both sides) open. Otherwise they have one single sided slip or room to park longways on the docks. They keep a close eye on all the boats to make sure everything is ok. One other thing is they do have power to all slips at no extra charge. The normal season rate is $640 but since it's July they said $300 until the season is over. If they have a full slip, I'm going to grab it.

Ron

ps. In August they have a marina cookout with a band... Woohooo!

Sounds more secure than where I slip my boat. And if you aren't leaving it in all the time, then you are right, bottom paint will not be needed. $300 for the rest of this year sounds good. (BTW, the "full" slip you are describing is known as a "single well slip".) If you get the single, you tie at all four corners or use a spring line from your mid cleat and then that way, you are tied off from all sides, and you don't even touch the dock at all.

Wow 300 bucks! I could only wish I could get a slip for that here in NJ. There asking over 1000 for the rest of the season. And thats the Marinas that are way to far and offer nothing like you have. All the other Good Marinas have a 2-5 year waiting list. At around 2-4k for the season.

Max, true, but have you ever been to Wheeling, West Virginia? It can make NJ truly look like the Garden State!

I was raised on the muddy banks of the Ohio. Just keep an eye on the weather patterns up north as the rise in the water can happen in hours. The Army Corp of Civil Engineers have a website that can allow you to monitor the pool levels. I use the website to keep me informed on the levels of the lakes in this region. I find it very useful.

Is this dock right on the river, or in a inlet to a tributary? I ask this because of the current of the river can make docking a bit of a challenge. Good luck and enjoy the rest of the season............SS

It's right on the river. The name is Warwood Marina. It's right below a small island so the current is pretty tame. Now the marina at Moundsville, that's a major current there. Launched my boat once there and never again.
Found an old picture of the marina...

Well, it's certainly nicer than East Liverpool, OH! ( I grew up just outside of East Liverpool, btw)

Best of luck to you Ron, I hope it all works out for ya!

Re: Questions about renting a slip

Thanks for all the info. The owner stopped by my house Wed. I paid and received my key right then. My slip is about 5 down from the upper end. Tested my bilge float switch last night, checked the bellows, ready to put her in this weekend. I'll take some pics and post.

Congrats, Ron-O. The worst thing about keeping a boat at a marina is the amount of gray hair you'll get worrying about her, especailly after a rain.
.
The average $ around my neck is $75 per foot for the spring/summer/fall season. A little less for the winter storage. Some guys have all the luck.
