1980 merc. stator wiring

I bought a replacement stator for 1980 merc.The new one has one more wire then original,it is black.I assume it is a ground,but where to hook it?THANKS

Not knowing which engine you have makes that difficult but in most cases it goes to the case mounting bolt on the switch box with the coil ground wires.

Under any engine ground screw it will reach.

You're right, grounding through the mounting screws is unreliable.
