What's the best Amplifier Assembly

Hi all.

I have a 1971 Evinrude 60HP outboard (60173C) that has a bad Amplifier module and want to know what's the best one to replace it with. The wires are all frayed and shorted to each other. The Rectifier is also bad and has frayed wires as well. I just got the boat from a friend and thought I was just going to put it in the water and go, but that is not the case. I wanted to at least see the engine running before I invest any more money into it which is $200 already.
Also the remote has this horn looking device that I'm assuming is the alarm in case the motor over heats. I traced the wire back to a sensor embedded in the motor. I'm rewiring the boat, adding a fuse/switch panel, a car radio, some new lights and a power plug for any accessories.
Hey this boating stuff is really getting expensive.:)

Thanks for any and all replies.

BRP, Sierra Teleflex and CDI are all OK for the electronics.

If the horn is wired to a sensor that has a tan wire coming out of it, it is indeed a overheat warning horn. The tan wire should have a connector near the sensor. Disconnect the connector, and short the wire going toward the horn to engine ground with the key "on". You should get a steady horn beep. This tests the horn and wiring. To test the sensor you need to heat it to approx. 165F and it will close to ground. It is normally open to ground.

The horn is a nice gimmick, but I wouldn't trust it. Have seen way too many motors burned up and the horn never sounded. What you should do is make sure the water pump is in 1st class good condition, then not worry about it. Those motors originally had a lot of pump trouble....the impeller hub would break free and spin in the rubber part. Replace it. And while you are at it, if the pump still has the original aluminum housing, replace the whole thing with the new style pump repair kit with plastic housing with stainless steel liners.

Yes, it gets expensive. Did you check the price of a new motor? If you cannot afford to fix it properly, you can't afford to have it. You might not be able to afford to run it either. That's a pretty simple hard fact of life.

Re: What's the best Amplifier Assembly

Thanks all for the advice.
Yes I was looking at changing out the water pump as I was suspect of when that was last done. Rubber can't last forever.
I'm off to install a car stereo and more wiring on the boat, a compass even, some new switches and......darn will it ever end????

PS. And I'm waiting on a couple hundred dollars worth of ignition and remote parts. My wife's gonna kill me.:D

BTW, for water pumps, I only use BRP parts ... too many issues with the third party stuff.
