I am just wondering how/when the gimball bearing goes bad. I am not in danger yet just as a prevenitive maintainence thing.

Re: gimball bearing

Not being greased regularly, and water in the belows are the most common reasons of premature bearing failure.

Like Don said no grease, water in the bellows.
There is a grease fitting on the rhs of the transom housing.GREASE GREASE GREASE.You can grease this as often as you can remember.Over greasing is not a problem.
There is no easy way to check for water in the bellows other than taking the drive off. You shoud check at least 1 time a year for water. Before you winterize.Jerry

Re: gimball bearing

The reason I ask is, I'm being told when the boat is turned hard to the stop's on both sides a slight clicking sound is being felt and noticed? is it U-joints or this Gimbal bearing? thanks

Re: gimball bearing

Sounds like your u-joints are going south..................I'd get them checked before they get worse.

Re: gimball bearing

If it only does it when you have the steering against the lock and engine rpms still up, yea, even new ujoints will make some noise. Slow down the rpms and don't turn so sharp when going fast.

Don't have a clue if you can or not, I don't know what tools you have or what mechanical abilities you have, you will need a slide hammer to get the old one out, the proper driver to reinstall it, and an alignment bar to align it after you install it. OR, are you talking about the ujoints??????

It would also help if we knew what type of outdrive you actually have.

Re: gimball bearing

Don S, you are the man! one bad u-joint We took this one in for the pro's to listen to and you were right. should have it back early next week, had them both replaced, also asked them to replace the bellows, I was told that these looked like new, but why tear it down twice? hope that was the right thing to do, but it seemed it was the right time to do it. what can I do to prevent this next time? I can hold my own with a tool box, and well...on a budget, so any info on this outdrive is great! thank all of you for the input, for us nonboaters this site is the best thing around.

Re: gimball bearing

Team, Thanks for the info. I will download this and be ready for the next challenge. I have to ask with the billows and u-joints being replaced should I have the gimbal replaced at the same time? and what sort of P.M. should I do to not have this happen? she is a 96 with less then 60 hour on her. I understand dry rot and age, and the marina told me that I'm way to excited and to relax. But this being My first I.O., I just don't know... all of you have been verrrrrry understanding Thanks
