A good friend of mine that lives in the city limits uses a trap to get rid of the ground hogs.

Now here is the problem. He has one of those have a heart live traps. Now he has trapped himself a skunk. How would a person get the dang thing out without getting sprayed? Covering up the cage is one way, but this trap is very hard to open with it uncovered. Any Ideas???????? SS

Re: Trapping Problem

Kind of a different solution and all might not agree with it....... Take it to the woods, and way back in the woods. Shoot the thing in the trap and walk away.

Oh how we would like to do that. When Pepe Lapew sees us, his tail immediately goes up over his head. I don't think we can get within 20' and not get sprayed. It hasn't let go of his stink yet,,,,,,,and we hope it doesn't :D

How long do you think it would take for it to die from lack of water/food?

Re: Trapping Problem

If you take your time move very slowly you should not have a problem. We had a problem years back with skunks in crawl space. Call a guy in and he went under the house with a big fishing net and came out with a skunk. I asked him if he ever got sprayed. He said never and he'd been doing this for over ten years. He gave me the above advice, if I cared to go at it myself next time.

We cover the trap and drop it in the test tank, it's hard on the skunk but oder free.

If you grab them by their tail and hold them up .... they can't spray you. I've done it dozens of times. You literally have to hold them off the ground by their tail. Then toss the sucker and run like the Devil is chasing you. :D Some people pick them up by their tail and drop them in a pillow case, and toss the whole thing. I don't see this as a necessary step, but you could do that too. That approach gives you a few more seconds to get out of there before he finds his way out.

Re: Trapping Problem

Hope that you are kidding here.

I just asking........we may need to feed it soon if we can't figure away to get it out of the cage..

Lifting it up by the tail would be ok if we was able to get at it. It being in the cage makes that idea impossible. To release the trap door, you have to use your hand to hold the door open......yeah, its someones homemade job. Works for the whistle pigs and coons,,,,,,,,,,,just no good on skunks

I'm thinking of getting a box that the trap will fit in. Lay the box down on the ground with the open end towards the trap. Toss a string with a hook onto the cage. Put the other end of the string thru a hole in the other end of the box. Then pull the cage into the box at a safe distance. After the cage is in the box, Fold the ends up. Then load Pepe up for a road trip to the woods. Im' thinking that maybe rolling the cage over will open the trap door. This way my friend will be happy that he didn't have to kill it.

Do they make a throw away camera? Skunk stink gets into everything that is close proximity. :D I'll see if he can or will with his. I'm not sure how he is going to handle the situation yet.

I told him some of the ideas. He plans on doing something with it in the morning after the neighbors go to work :D

Re: Trapping Problem

This happened to me and I just called animal control and they came and took it away. Next day I went and got my trap back. Piece of cake and no stinky mess.:)
