a car engine will not work unless the block has been stripped down and fully marinized.

Ayuh,....

Basically,.. That motor should be Just Fine.....
GM truck motors are almost exactly the same as production Boat motors.....

So,... What's the Drive,..??

Btw,...
I donno what your hull's Holes are for,....
But,... They definitely need to be Plugged...

Did you happen to change the Carb, Starter, Alt, Ignition, and Fuel System to marine version. Hopefully you were able to use these parts from the old motor. Otherwise they will need to be changed. Or the boat could go boom.

Re: new to boating need help

The only thing you really need to change on the engine is the freeze plugs (should be brass), and make sure the head gaskets are non-metalic.

Do that, and the engine will last as long as the hull, if you maintain it properly.

Your truck cam should be fine for boating. If you have problems, you can change it out for a marine cam for about $150 or so.

As was already mentioned, make sure the starter, alternator, distributor, carb, and fuel pump are marine parts. These are a must, as they're a huge safety issue.

The water pump also won't last long if it's not a marine pump.

Ayuh,...

Marine Carbs are designed to leak into the motor.....
Automotive Carbs will Leak into the Bilge.....
If it should Leak at All that is.... Another Safety Feature....... ;)

Re: new to boating need help

Hi, Mike. Welcome to the forum. Try to relax a little; you sound very anxious and there's no need to be. So far, you're doing pretty well. You do need to replace the carb and distributor with marine versions to eliminate the possibility of an explosion or fire. For help with the"holes" you keep mentioning, photos are needed. You should also get yourself a Mercruiser service manual for the engine you have. It will make maintenance and repairs alot easier. As you've been told, boat engines and truck engines are basically the same. Boat engine use brass "freeze-out" plugs and stainless steel or non-metallic head gaskets (eliminates rust). Those should be changed. Any other questions you've got will be answered here. So relax and enjoy getting your boat ready. Safe boating. Hy

Re: new to boating need help

I hope you used the exhaust manifolds that were on the original engine in the boat, they are water cooled !

Re: new to boating need help

Maybe you have thru hull exhaust and they are your other holes? Again, pictures would be invaluable in helping you..
