on a 1987 40hp johnson i can not unhook the shift rod. I pulled a clip pin and slide rod to left but it appears a hex nut set screw stops this from under the carbs. Do i need to release this set screw-It looks impossible without removing other parts. i am lost. lower unit is dropped about an inch so if i succeed here i could win.

remove the water intakes on the lower uint.you will see a jam nut set up. split this then spread them apart you will see a black keeper remove the upper one and you WIN!!!!.

He has a 40 not a 35. See his other thread on the same subject.

Re: un hooking shift rod

i have everything but the shift rod unhooked. when i slide the shift rod to pull it out it appears that an end "clip set screw" keeps it from un hooking. very frustrating.

Re: un hooking shift rod

There is no "set screw" in that set up. There is a bolt that holds the clevis on the upper shift rod. If you have all the bolts out of the lower unit and thats what's holding pressure on the shift rod it'll never come apart. Did you look at the parts diagram like I suggested in your other post?
