Argh....I'll bite....

This is like asking which is better: Ford or Chevy? McCain or O'Bama? Saran Wrap or Cling Wrap? The USA or Canada?? Jews or Christians?? Coke or Pepsi?

Do you get the idea?

When I get done banging my head on my desk, I will probably regret posting this and delete it altogether...

Re: best boat motor

I have a Johnson now that I really like but I also had an amazing Mercury in the past. I guess it really is a personal choice. If you had a good experience, you'll like them and if you had a lemon you'll swear against them.

Re: best boat motor

The BEST boat motor is .............................................................................................................the one that uses no fuel, has unlimited horsepower, never needs service, repairs, or maintenance, and is free. Also it must weigh nothing. Since you will not find a motor that meets that criteria, you will have to compromise. What is important to you? That said, I don't think ANYONE is building a bad outboard these days. Everyone has preferences. My Dad had a Mercury when I was young. My first boat had a Mercury which I used for 22 years. So I thought I wanted a Mercury on my new boat, only to find out that it came pre-rigged with a Yamaha. After doing some research, I found that Yamahas were well-respected motors and have been very happy with it now for over three years. Buy any motor and take good care of it and it will probably take good care of you.

Geeeezz, Nelson. By that iboats poll, we have as many Force owners out there as we do Yamaha. Let's see, if popularity counts, then those Force owners are as happy as those Yamaha owners..

I really don't think i want to take this any further..:p

I like haskinds post....

I can't tell you the best, but I sure can tell you the worst. Its on my bench right now! I can hardly wait to get rid of this black albatross.

My only real experience has been with Johnson/Evinrude, Mercury and Yamaha. I have limited experience with Nissan and Suzuki. My preference is Johnson/Evinrude, but our Yamaha's have never given us any trouble either.

This outta start a thread war for sure.
According to my poll, looks like most people prefer Johnnyrudes.
According to what's on my creek, Yammies are extremely popular followed by Merc.

Re: best boat motor

I've owned a Merc 90 and most recently a Johnson 150. Both are great motors but, without a doubt, the Merc made alot more sense when you pull cowling( less intimidating to work on, easier acces to starter armatue, flyweel, etc. and easier to identify external moving parts) Those are the only motors I've ever had though so this quuite possibly could be a size issue, not brand. Just airing out thoughts, at this point, I'm indifferent to both as they've both been good to me overall.

I prefer the ones that never break down. Until then I will continue to use those that need service and repairs.

Re: best boat motor

Well I only have experience with Johnsons and Mercury/Mariner. My Johnsons have never given one bit of trouble. I've had to do more work to my Mariner since I bought it earlier this year than the 2 Johnsons in my yard combined. Having said that, I now have the Mariner (1997 115hp) running great and I'm hoping it stays that way. Also, both Johnsons I have are the 3-cylinder that are highly regarded as being bulletproof (1976 Johnson 70hp and 1991 Johnson 60hp VRO). MMy BIL has had sevveral Merc's (90hp, 135hp, 150hp) and he likes then fine.

Re: best boat motor

don't know about the newer ones as I don't as a rule mess with them. My experience when you get into the older ones the Johnson and Evinrude are easier to work on then the Mercs and parts tend to be a bit cheaper.

Re: best boat motor

The one that gets you back to shore.... In my case, that would be a '94 Force 70, but in my buddies case, triple 300hp Yamahas ($2,400 to fill it up, and he does it every 2 weeks):eek::eek:

It's a personal preference, a point which has been well stated. Buy what you like, and keep it well maintained, (that's a key point in anything you own), and enjoy it like it was meant to be enjoyed.

Re: best boat motor

My opinion,
Mercs are great motors.....until they break. PITA to work on and hard troubleshoot in my opinion. Not as many parts available cheap. I do love my '72 mercury 9.8 motor. Mercurys start GREAT when warm from my experience.
OMC's are reliable and vs. mercury are almost invariably easier to start, and easier to work on/troubleshoot/cheaper to find parts for.
This is on old ones.

On newer ones, I like yamahas o.k. but my dad's new one has a lot of little annoying problems with it (25hp).

My favorite motor of all time: the johnson or evinrude 18 hp. Particularly the '57 and '58 models. Darn things just won't quit, have lots of power for their weight, easy as anything to work on, sound good, start good, and most importantly---LOOK GOOOD!!!!;)
