hi i have a mid 70s chrysler 15 hp outboard that runs well, the only problem is that there is no recoil or electric start
taking the hood and wrapping a rope round the flywheel is getting a little tiring
could any one help photos of starters or part numbers would help alot
thanks

Re: chrysler recoil starter

That recoil starter was used on Chrysler 8, 9.9 through 15 and Force 9.9 possibly through 15 engines so you have a lot of engines and years to choose from.

They come up on ebay periodically but are expensive for a used part, usually selling for around 30 bucks or more.

If you can find a whole junk engine to salvage one from, that would be the way to go since I am sure that a new assembly would go well over 60 bucks.

The assembly consists of a top bracket and a bottom bracket that bolt to the engine using two bolts each, plastic a rope spool, rope and handle, a plastic idler pulley, an internal rewind spring, and a plastic bendix gear. You know the dealer will hurt you and leave you walking funny if you buy a new assembly.

There is also an interlock to prevent starting in gear but that assembly is not necessary--the starter will work without it. If you have it, use it. If not----the decision is yours.

thanks for that. do you think that johnson type starters with a modified bendix may work.

Re: chrysler recoil starter

Gentlemen, Can someone tell me how to set the tension on recoil spring on pull start. Motor is a 1982 Montgomery Ward (Chrysler).
15-HP at 5100-rpm
Model # VWB-52119-C
Serial # 28-X-25123
Bought new parts but can't figure how to retension the spring. Any help will be appreciated.
