Re: IKE pics
What I can't believe is that they aren't showing any of this on the news anymore. People need to see what has happened in our own country...
Unfortunately the Mayor and the City Manager, in a early, very naive attempt to stop any negative news concerning the city, kicked all reporters and news crews off Galveston island. Then proceeded to issue a gag order to all city employees, under the threat of immediate dismissal, for speaking to the press.
They attempted to achieve what amounted to news blackout. Allowing reporters to only speak with them, and they wanted edit rights to all film & photos before publication.
This is a typical knee jerk reaction from small, tourist financed towns, and their officials, who are scared their bread and butter, “the tourist”, will never come back if they see the truth of what happened, and how the recovery is being handled.
It is also uncomfortable for these officials to operate in the public eye, i.e. if nobody knows what I am doing, then nobody can say I am doing nothing, or doing it wrong.
They were also apparently worried that the lack of preparation by city officials in the years leading up to this latest hurricane, the mismanagement of building codes on the island, and lack of sea walls, etc. would come to light.
They are after all elected officials

, and
their first priority is to be reelected.
This all didn't set well, with either the "State Officials" in Texas, Federal Emergency Response Organizations, or the Press. Under pressure from “State Officials” they opened up the island for coverage once again, because the people that live there have not only a "need to know" what is going on with their neighborhoods, and businesses, but also a "right to know".
When the press was allowed to come back, many had already lost interest, packed up and gone. Moving on to the the next story.
Now that people are coming back, we are starting to see their photos of the devastation.
The global financial economic crash, has now taken center stage (news), even to the point of pushing the American Elections off the screen here.
