Re: IKE pics

We appreciate whomever put that slideshow together. I downloaded it. So much destruction, it'll be years before business and prosperity returns to our Island. A few businesses in the slideshow were eventually washed away by the fury of Ike. It was nice to see them just before they were gone.

I was taking pictures the other day and at the end of our trip, the last street we went down, there was a break-away wall out by the roadside painted with red spray paint.......

"...and the Lord taketh away."

That about sums it up.

Re: IKE pics

Amazing and sad.

Family had a house and I spent summers on Galveston Island as a kid.
It's unrecognizable now.

Re: IKE pics

Word is, that the building setback line will move back maybe even as much as 1,000 feet. So I don't expect any new homes will ever be built beachside for a long, long time.

It'll be a year before they determine the new MSL (Mean Sea Level) line. Until then, beach house homeowners must obtain a special permit from the State of Texas in order to repair their properties. They are NOT allowed to rebuild any structures at sea level or concrete drives, etc. Also, houses will have to be rebuilt to the new elevation.

In 3-6 months we should see the sand return to the beaches instead of 6' drop off that exists after Ike.

We desperately need a breakwater for the West End of the Island. Erosion is our worst enemy. If we don't do something, there will be no Galveston Island.

I feel for everyone down there. How did Freeport make out?

Freeport has damage, but not as bad as further up the coast toward us. In fact, our Brazoria County office had no damage at all. Beach houses suffered for sure there however.

What I can't believe is that they aren't showing any of this on the news anymore. People need to see what has happened in our own country...:(

Its true the coverage quickly disappeared as IKE wasn't as bad as was originally feared so it didn't have the same interest to the news media.

Its unfortunate that people have to experience this and after looking at these photos, I don't even know where you begin.

I certainly hope everything works out and some sense of normal returns quickly.

Re: IKE pics

One of the pictures that stuck in my mind was the one with the one house that was still standing while all around up and down the beach were gone. There is much to gain from the design and specs of that house that should be followed for the rebuilding of the others.

Unfortunately the Mayor and the City Manager, in a early, very naive attempt to stop any negative news concerning the city, kicked all reporters and news crews off Galveston island. Then proceeded to issue a gag order to all city employees, under the threat of immediate dismissal, for speaking to the press.

They attempted to achieve what amounted to news blackout. Allowing reporters to only speak with them, and they wanted edit rights to all film & photos before publication.

This is a typical knee jerk reaction from small, tourist financed towns, and their officials, who are scared their bread and butter, “the tourist”, will never come back if they see the truth of what happened, and how the recovery is being handled.

It is also uncomfortable for these officials to operate in the public eye, i.e. if nobody knows what I am doing, then nobody can say I am doing nothing, or doing it wrong.

They were also apparently worried that the lack of preparation by city officials in the years leading up to this latest hurricane, the mismanagement of building codes on the island, and lack of sea walls, etc. would come to light.

They are after all elected officials , and their first priority is to be reelected.

This all didn't set well, with either the "State Officials" in Texas, Federal Emergency Response Organizations, or the Press. Under pressure from “State Officials” they opened up the island for coverage once again, because the people that live there have not only a "need to know" what is going on with their neighborhoods, and businesses, but also a "right to know".

When the press was allowed to come back, many had already lost interest, packed up and gone. Moving on to the the next story.

Now that people are coming back, we are starting to see their photos of the devastation.

The global financial economic crash, has now taken center stage (news), even to the point of pushing the American Elections off the screen here.
