Looks like this is a pretty common question but...........

I am looking at replacing my VHF radio.....having trouble transmitting at high power setting.

I am considering getting a radio that interfaces with my Garmin GPS 192.

I am looking at the Standard Horizon Matrix GX3000s.........seems to have alot of options at a reasonable price.

Any opinions?

When I ask for a radio check I am told there is some noise unless I switch to the low power setting.

Make sure that there is at least 12 volts ( use a volt meter ) going to the radio it sounds like your voltage is dropping when you transmitt on high setting.

Make sure you have at least 14 guage wire going from the battery to the radio and all connection are clean and tight. Problem is usually the power going to the radio not the radio. 12 guage wire is even better. Radio is really designed to run on 13.8 volts. A fully charged battery will supply 12.6 volts but any loose or dirty connection will cause a frying noise in high power and the voltage will drop below 12.6 volst in high power.

It is hard to buy a bad radio today and Standard Horzion is a good radio. I feel the top of the line is ICom but would also tell you a good antenna is more important than a good radio in my opinion.

Thanks, I will check the voltage.
If the voltage is OK..........what radio do you guys recommend?

The ICOM seems more $$$...........how about the Standard Horizon Matrix?
Want to connect to my GPS.

The Matrix is a decent radio but will not feedback position data to a Garmin chart plotter if you want to show DSC positions on your plotter.

We worked through the same problem with a "less expensive" Icom in an earlier thread.

You have to look very carefully. It said that it transmit the data to a Standard Horizon chartplotter. Read between the lines if it will transmitt to another brand as well

BTW: Thanks for the compliment on my boat. She's one fishing machine :)
