Just watched a terrible follow up report of the “AMG SL65 Black Series” last night. Too expensive, too heavy, too complicated, no driver feedback.

The German testers (closed road course/race track), compared it to driving a video game. So many electronic gadgets separating the driver from the road, that you really didn't know what the car was doing. The computers were constantly doing things, that nobody could understand why they were doing. These same problems were present in previous models, but got worse, not better.

Their conclusion. If you want the image of a rich kid, unlimited budget, boy racer, but can't really drive, then this is the car for you. If you want a real performance car, then look elsewhere.

Looks cool, but more at home on Rodeo Drive than the Autobahn.

I like Maserati cars. They have style.

That is strikingly similar to the Toyota Supra. You can get a tricked out Supra for less then that fancy looking benz and will out run it too.

You can get a nice house and a Supra, for less than the Mercedes. :)

Unfortunately the Maserati was the other test car last night in this long series of test. It suffered from the same problems as the Mercedes, just but not quite as bad.

Up to now the have liked the Audi made Lamborghini, Audi R8 V10, Porsche S4, BMW M5, and last but not least the overall winner, once again, is the American made Corvette. :D: It has none of the problems of the others, has beat or tied them in all performance test, reliability is one of it's greatest assets, maintenance doesn't cost the price of a small house per year, can be serviced at every GM dealer, and works as a daily driver.

It also cost much less than all others. As much as a ? their price.

What they did say negatively about the Corvette, is that in the last years, GM has continually bumped the price :( to a point that it is no longer a super car for the people.

I like the style of my Lincoln Mark VII. Other then that they haven't made a good looking car in 30 years or better.

Love the Pontiac G-8 too! I drove one awhile back and it was a rocket ship.
Like a Grand Prix on major steroids! 0 to 60 in 5.3 seconds..

May end up with a G8 next if the Grand Prix is out of production. Not driven one yet but looked a few over. Nice looking car and from what you say really powerful. However I just love the look of the Grand Prix so much. I will test drive a G8 soon and see.

Now we're talking! Back to the subject of a Good old American 4dr Sport sedan, that doesn't require you to sell your house to buy it, or enjoy it! ;)
Either of these are high on the list of my favorites, of course a Corvette is at the top, but that'll never happen for me unless I hit the lottery, fat chance of that

A American car that is killing the Germans at their own game is the Chrysler 300 with the Hemi.

It regularly beats them one on one in direct comparison test, and when it comes to price it is usually 50% under all they can bring to the table. Really pisses them off.

To beat German cars in a test in Germany, you really have to be good.

Actually, it wasn't all "American made". The 300 was a joint effort, did you forgot about Daimler Chrysler already? It's comparable to the benz because they shared parts.

I wish I could forget, but the 300 was and is made in America, just like many of todays Mercedes. They are now German branded, American imports to Germany. :D

As far as sharing parts go, a recent study from the auto industry I read, said worldwide 80% of the parts used by all manufactures to assemble any car, are now outsourced to the same groups of suppliers. Thus making all cars to an extent of up to 80% related in some way or the other.

Don't forget that even in the early 80's that many GM products were assembled in Canada, from parts made in Mexico. This would make even some Mercedes, more a product of the States, than many Chevrolet's.

Re: Here's by far the best looking 4-door Sedan....Detroit: Build me one!

Detroit doesn't lead, it follows, and the reason is simple. It's customer base is not made up of the “early decider” types. We tend to wait for trends to go main stream, before buying. The everybody else has one, I need one too, kind of buyers. Don't dare to be different.

As a whole, we need someone else to say it is cool, before we we accept it as cool.

That doesn't mean America auto manufactures can't design and build good looking cars. The new Tesla Model S, I think, is a good example of a 4door with modern lines, and none of the “pimp my ride” clich? styling.

Well guys a couple years ago I plunked down the money for a Chrysler 300 with a 5.7 hemi, it regularly gets 18+MPG. around town and 23+MPG. at 70+MPH on the highway. It's now at 78000 miles on the clock and other than oil changes and gas I have spent less than $300. on maintenance. I love the car it's very quick and agile and a joy to drive at speed. If I have any complait about the car it's poor visablity out the back but who cares.
