how many of u guys besides the tournament fisherman ever thought u spent to much and maybe should of stuck with what u had. i never thought i would ever of had a boat until neighbor gave me a boat that is mechanical sound but ugly interior wise. i love to bass and crappie fish. this boat is 15 ft but is an inboard so 3 feet is gone already. it has no live well but is cheap on gas. i have been looking at other boats for some time now that i can afford something nicer. but i struggle with if i buy used that i may get a lemon motor. then i have had guys tell me to buy what i want from the jump cause if not happy will want something else later. and o my goodness the tournament at the lake this weekend did not help matters at all. all those nice high dollar rangers was everywhere. to be honest i would just like more room and nice.

Take your "NEW" boat and clean it up and go fishing.:):) The fish don't know if you are in a HIGH DOLLAR boat or a old galvanized wash tub.:eek:
An Styrofoam cooler with a air bubbler will work for your live well.
ENJOY "YOUR NEW BOAT".

Re: was ur new or used boat a mistake?

We all struggle with that. My dad went through as many boats in as many years because he couldn't decide on which one he liked the best. The bass boat was to low and he got wet, the Mr. Muskie was too high and the bow would blow around like a parasol, the one after that was something else...then it was too big, and then he bought the little blue fin 14ft fishing boat I have now. It was fine, but I'm sure there were things he complained about with that too.

No boat can be all boats, and that's the problem. You may buy a crappie boat and like that it can get into shallow water and is easy to reach the water to pull out a fish, but then you won't like it when the wind comes up in the middle of the lake, or.....

I'm restoring this glastron trihull....I've NEVER ridden in one, I've never FLOATED this boat EVER. I have no idea if I'll like it or not! Which has given me pause from time to time...but I'm going to see it through and probably hate it in rough water when I want to get back to the launch at WOT. Meh, what do you do? You take the good with the bad.

I'll probably spend more time fishing in my little boat than the big one. I've always caught fish in it, and I can fish where ever I want to on the lakes I fish. Probably won't be able to do that with the big glass boat.

Boat fit changes with age and users geographic location.
In 1971 I started with an wrecked Mercury Kiekhaefer factory picklefork. Repaired one damaged fork, modified it to seat 2 people. Had no motor and no money. Never had it in the water, sold it for a profit.
(California) 32ft Trojan F32, Sportfisher, nice, big, slow and expensive to slip and use.
(ohio) 26ft Wellcraft Nova II twin 260's . Loved this boat, Fast, beautiful, classic, but too big for me (alone), no big water around here, and sold it with much apprehension.
(ohio) 23ft Browning Cuddy almost free project, POS, sold it.
(ohio) Now, 19' Tracker Magna, alum CC, not pretty, cheap, easy handling/towing, just a safe reliable fishing boat.
So, in my 37 boat years my needs and wants in a boat have changed ..yours will also. Probably everybody's taste in boats change over the years.
There is no "perfect boat," only "perfect" for the time being.
That's why they are addressed as females.

Re: was ur new or used boat a mistake?

I bought a new boat last year. I had some specific requirements that I couldn't meet in a used boat. I'm happy as can be.

No doubt, for those of us that use a boat for multiple roles it can be a difficult process to find the acceptable compromise. Bought a new aluminum mistake and decided to return to glass boats. I made my choice in dealer's showrooms then waited for what I wanted - a specific model and color, low hours, and less than one year old. I had to drive 400 miles, but I saved 5K off the price of new and both boat and motor are still under warranty.

Re: was ur new or used boat a mistake?

can't have it all, unless you can afford it. a free mechanically sound boat sounds pretty good, what can you lose?

it's an inboard so you don't have to worry about getting your line cut on the prop? you probably have a swim platform that sucks too.

any boat that gets you on the water...and back, is a great boat imo. fix her up and sell her if you want but don't be too surprised if your next boat leaves you missing things about your last boat...read my first sentence again.

All boats are a compromise. That's why we have more than one boat.

Re: was ur new or used boat a mistake?

you cant worry about it...it definitely can be nerve wracking though. When I sold my old boat for a little larger one I was kept asking myself what am I getting in to? I am selling a boat that I know works well and buying something that could maybe be a disaster. you just have to go for it.

Re: was ur new or used boat a mistake?

Sold my 14' runabout (1975) with a 1965 50HP Merc. That outboard purred like a kitten. Hated to part with it but the boat needed some work and was too small for my needs.

Sold it, bought a newer used boat (2002). Works great and buying used saved me lots of $$$$.

I don't think either were mistakes, just part of becoming a boat owner and finding what you need vs what you want and meeting your needs.

But, like others, I'm getting MBS.....and wish I had the old boat as a project boat. Only thing between me and a project boat is the Treasury (aka my wife)

Re: was ur new or used boat a mistake?

Living on a civil servants salary and having other priorities, I've never been able to afford the 'perfect boat' (or pickup, or house, or much else for that matter.
I assume you're in a similar situation otherwise you would just go plop down your coin for what you want.
Given the financial restrictions...several nice boats have come my way through the years at prices I could deal with. I'm always on the lookout. Matter of fact I just passed up a cherry showroom condition '74 Thunderbird trihull with a '79 Merc 90 on the back. Total hours 5. Total price (with p.o.s. trailer) $1000.
Keep your eyes open, something will come along.

MBS? I'm up to 8 right now, usually when spring rolls around each year, I'm up to about 15 or so, I'll weed through them all and keep the best ones each year. The problem is every year I add another to my permanent fleet.

No one boat will every be the perfect boat, I have one for the small lakes and ponds, another for two larger lakes here, one for the upper river, another for the lower river and back bays, one for bigger water, and another just for crabbing, plus one that's in progress which will be ready soon which will be more of a play boat than a fishing boat the way it looks.
There's always a boat the catches your eye that gets you thinking, then you buy it and add it to the fleet, every so often I let one go, only due to a lack of space. If I had the room, I'd probably have 20 boats by now. I'm pushing it with the one's I have now.
