The local grade school has Kindergarden through 4th grade. I just learned that the Kindergarden grade has been renamed to "Pre-First". Apparently, some people felt that the 4 year olds that attend Kindergarden have problem with not having an official grade number. In order to not offend the 4 year olds, the title of Kindergarden has been changed to "Pre-First".
My wife is a member of the official "Moms Club" (Yahoo affiliation) and hosts meeting at our home twice a month. This topic came up and all the mothers were annoyed that Kindergarden got renamed.
I was home that day and suggested that anytime they were dealing with the school, to ALWAYS refer to Kindergarden as "Kindergarden" and nothing else. If the school corrected them, they should admonish the representitive for the name change and continue to use the title "Kindergarden".
The name Kindergarden means "Children's Garden", AKA a place where children get together and learn social interaction skills, like sharing and taking turns with toys. Exactly what a 4 year old needs. It is not Education in the strict sense of the word.
Just goes to show what can happen when you don't pay attention to the details of school meetings.
It also points out that there are some people who put the 4 year olds "feelings" above the traditional school structure. The parent that felt that Kindergarden should be renamed needs to have their head examined.
This is what the USA is coming to.
