Well this time one of therm is very close. We are upwind and it will stay that way, but it is only around 3 -4 miles away.

They are calling this one the freeway fire (Corona-Anaheim Hills). This pic is from across the street from my house:

This next pic is from my back yard and I think they are calling it the Brea fire. The smoke from the Freeway fire has come from East to West to join up in this big dark cloud. We'll be in kind of an eclipse in another 30 minutes or so.

Wow....Hope you are o/k....I"m in Vegas right now but live in O.C. My neighbor just called and said fires were in Yorba Linda and Anaheim hills and Brea...He said the 91 freeway was closed as well as the 57 and the 241 and I think the 5 in LA...Not good with the heavy winds going on...Jim..

Yes, that whole 241, 91, 71 area is a total parking lot right now. People are leaving their cars etc.

I've lived on the east coast my entire life.
Been in San Diego one week years ago. Excellent weather.
I always wondered why anyone would want to live in a place that is so susceptable to fires, mudslides, earthquakes, etc.
Have I been misled or is it just something you get used to or what?

I think you were misled mthieme. The proof is in the fact that it was the last coast to be populated and is now so crowded that you can hardly find a place to rest your weary body. (or at least afford a place to do so)

And of course the teeming masses are demanding that their state gubmint do everything for them so the state can hardly any longer afford to tackle its basic responsibilities, like fighting fires.:p

My exposure is less than minimal.
All I see is what it is on the news...and of course the more sensational the more newsworthy.

Do you get the smell from them QC?
We have been fortunate for the past 6yrs.....I hate the smell of burnt pine smoke, if the fire come from the south, and gum trees if from the west.
Stinks the house out for ages.
Hope all goes you.
Cheers

Re: Another year, more fires . . .

OK, well they are evacuating the Southern parts of my City. Carbon Canyon is a "village" within Chino Hills. We are in Gordon Ranch village which is on the northern "border" of the Carbon Canyon village. But we are still good here as the winds are still blowing from East to West which has the fire sort of moving laterally along a line about 3 miles south of us. No smell, ash or anything from this one, but we can see some flames and a glow that is probably 10 miles long. We have many friends that have been evacuated from Carbon Canyon and the evacuation center is our local High School. I'll update up until we have to evacuate, but I don't think that'll happen. We are in a good spot regardless of how clse we are.

Like the hurricanes here in the Gulf South, it seems like the annual fire problem in southern Calif. has become much more severe in the last decade. I lived in the SF bay area in the early/mid 70s, and don't remember hearing about our southern neighbors having such problems.

My best wishes to all in the affected areas.

Well we're still OK. One difference though is the wind direction has changed enough that we are getting hammered with smoke. I'm not sure which is worse, the smell, or the wife biotching about the smell . . . Stay tuned . . .

Latest update. The wind is back in our favor, but waaaaaay worse for friends in Brea and Diamond Bar. Stay tuned for some awesome video and some more pics that I just shot from a hilltop by the house. The aerial symphony I was just watching is simply amazing.

I am shooting this from a hill that gives us an awesome 360 degree view. My house is the unobstructed one on the left. This is looking Southwest right at the area of most concern this AM.

And here is a video of the newest aerial assault asset . . . A converted DC10 that is getting a lot of press here. He is coming in from the East and hitting the middle of the smoke in the pic above.
